I've been doing apartment complex laps because my complex is built on a hill and there are 43 stairs to the upper level & 28 stairs down. It's 500 steps to do one lap. I've worked my way up to 7 laps so far. This is a pretty good workout if I keep up a good pace. I use my pedometer to see how many WW points I've earned and to keep track of steps in case I lose count on my laps.

At the gym, I also use the elliptical trainer, and rowing machine.

    Hope that helps a little!

It is, but you will want to monitor your heart rate to see how hard you are working. I have found that if I don't monitor my hear rate, I may not be working hard enough to get a really good workout.

Other stuff I do includes the elliptical trainer, the recumbent bike (you sit as if in a chair and pedal with your legs out in front of you), and the rowing machine. All low impact and pretty IC-friendly.

But walking is way cheaper! Just need a pair of shoes and somewhere to walk ....
