  • Drinking "lots" of water makes my symptoms worse

Hey, I find that when I drink a lot of water, as in like 8-10 glasses a day, that it makes my frequency a lot worse. It makes me have to go a lot more obviously, but, it is in smaller amounts. The discomfort of my bladder increases and it feels like it is spasming.

Anybody find drinking more water irritates their bladder? Also, I've done it from a number of different water sources, so, it is not because of what is in the water.

Yes, I've found that to be true for me as well. I generally do best spreading my water out through the day - 1 cup of milk with cereal, 1-1/2 cups of hot milk with Pero (for some reason, milk is easier for my bladder to tolerate than water?!!), 2 cups of water sipped slowly through the work day, another cup sipped slowly when I get home, one cup of water or diluted juice (blueberry or pear) with dinner. And that's about all I can do on a good day.

I watched my dad chug a 16oz bottle of water this morning and thought, "if I did that, my bladder would cramp and spasm for the rest of the day." That's one of the things people without IC don't understand, that drinking too much water or waiting too long to go to the bathroom - isn't just a problem for the time the water is in the bladder, it causes discomfort for hours afterwards.

My daily goal is six to eight cups of water. More than that, at least for me, is not good. If I don't get enough, my urine becomes concentrated and irritating.

Hi, tighidden ~ I'm right there with you and Kadi.....I just cannot drink even water in a large amount without my bladder going crazy for hours. My PA suggested I take Prelief even before water so I sure try to remember but sometimes I'm forgetful and it's difficult when I love to have a bottle of water by my side during the day. I find that just little bits now and then work best for me. If I go to lunch with a friend and have water during our "visit" I'm sure to suffer afterwards but my goodness, gotta drink something. I even bring my own bottle when I go places so like you....it's not the type of water.

Hope knowing others share your difficulties helps make your like a little more bearable.

Have a nice day.....lovely week ahead,
Never heard of IC til suspected....Never knew so many suffer from it. Praying for a cure. I've found answers...so can you...keep the hope.

I have always wondered that too.. when I drink the amount of water everyone suggests, I am in bathroom every 10 mins even if I don't have a flair up. Now I go by the urine color. If it is white or near white I know I am good and hydrated without having to drink even more..

I heard that Arrowhead is the best for IC, so I've tried it and I guess it's helping? I haven't really seen a difference because I pee anyway, but maybe someone else can try it and see if it helps you.

Thank you for this post. I totally thought I was alone on this one.

YES! When I drink the 6-8 I flare in the worst way. Like you I find I feel like I have to pee so bad (and probably do because I am drinking so much) but when I go it's a little and it actually hurts afterwards. It can go on for a full 24 hours after I finish my last glass. I find that when I stick to my usual 2 bottles a day I am a much happier camper. I go when I have to go and urine actually comes out normal.
