  • Should absorbic and citric acid be avoided?

I realize this may be a stupid question, but I'd feel better to have an answer here on the forum. I've been reading as much as possible about the diet. And I really want to make a stronger effort to follow it to a tee. Do you suggest avoiding ALL foods with citric acid, absorbic acid, yeast extract, MSG, sodium nitrite, etc? It is so hard to find foods without these added ingredients and I'm going nuts... LOL

So far I'm only drinking water. That's one major step. Now this next step, which is figuring out how to buy natural foods without preservatives is REAL tough. I am literally changing my entire lifestyle and eating habits and it's so darn tricky.

I will say to you I'm reading the Better Bladder Book...and I printed the diet list here on the site. However, my mind is overwhelmed.

Medicines: For IC am doing PT, and will be taking Gabapentin, Ativan, Tramadol and Ambien. Ice packs and drinking vanilla shakes help. Foods that cause a flare, tomatoes, yogurt, coffee, soda, all sports drinks, and most teas. Take Verapamil, Naproxen (as needed), Omeprazole, Frova (as needed) and receive Botox shots(every three months) for migraines. For allergies I use Claritin and Flonase. (Feel free to ask me any questions about meds.)

Other conditions: Migraines, allergies, mild IBS.

Yes to both as a general rule. They are pretty similar to each other. They both are acids that occur naturally in citrus fruits.

I can get away with small amounts of each but it has to be very far down on the ingredients list.

Wow... that stinks. Most candy has one or both. Of course...we can live without candy. But that was one luxury I wanted to indulge in occasionally. And it seems every food on the shelf in the grocery store has those ingredients...

      This is an eye opener.

Someone suggested Strawberry Twizzlers to me. I did buy them but haven't eaten them yet. They had the same ingredients as other candy so I don't know why they wouldn't be a problem. I am going to try them next month I think. In about 6 months I will try Skittles or Gummy Bears or something like that. As long as the citric acid is towards the end of ingredients.

Right now candy-wise I have Root beer barrels and Werthers. I miss the fruity stuff too.

The only citric acid I can tolerate is in gummy candies (I love gummy sharks). Fruit or juice has Citric Acid that I can't tolerate. I am assuming that gummies contain a very little amount?

Yeah, I had also read on here somewhere someone could tolerate gummy bears. That's wht it's on my 'try' list for a little while later. It must be a little quantity or how it's used in the candy/food I think.

              Hi guys,

I wanted to respond to the twizlers post, my hubby got the strawberry twizlers I had a handful last night and have been fine. However Mike&Ikes had my bladder burning within hour to two. I am not a huge sugar candy person, I am more chocolate lover so needless to say that has been HARD for me. Constructing a diet following IC has been challeging due to so may different theories. So I am starting extreme to clear my system no packaged foods, veggies chicken fish long grain rice, blah blah blah. However I have been feeling good for last three days which has been month and half coming. No doubt this is a pisser of a disease

I found an organic candy website where they sell hard candies like root beer barrels that didn't have any added citric or ascorbic acid. (I haven't bought any myself, but someone posted here last year that her young daughter with IC was always heartbroken at Halloween about not getting candy, so I Googled "organic candy" it because that made me sad.) Due to the rules of the forum I can't post the site. But if you do a little poking around you can find some acid-free options for hard candy.

Pear/Blueberry Juice without added vitamin C? Where to find?

                    Hello,
Am following a strict IC diet paired with a selective high alkaline diet. It seems impossible to find juices from allowable fruits that don't have added vitamin C. Do such things exist? And where can I find them? Even the health food stores I've checked have the added-C juices. Thanks for any help.

I am glad I found this thread Some good advice in here, and it gives me a little hope as well. Yes, it is indeed hard at times but I am slowly learning. And the great thing is - I am very experimental in the kitchen these days. Something I really wasn't six months ago! So, thanks to my IC maybe I will become a better chef. Although, I will never win any contests! Actually, I almost started a fire in the kitchen when preparing lunch today. So you all get the picture of what kind of "chef" I am...

Severe problems started Feb 2011. My IC = mostly severe pain. At times "discomfort" in the bladder/urethra & a "burning sensation". In periods (esp when I flare): urgency/frequency. I had numerous UTI's when I was 1,5 years old - until I was 12.

Treatments I tried so far that made me worse:
Gepan instillation, Silver nitrate instillation (got worse) Hydrodistention, August 31st 2012 (worse for 4 weeks)

Treatments I tried so far that seems to help:
Tramadol for pain (does not help if pain is severe but other times it can give good relief), glass of water/baking soda (use that when I feel a flare with burning in urethra), elimination diet (helped me the most so far), going to a therapist once a week, stretches from my PT, TENS unit, Hydroxyzine (Atarax), 25 mg (started Dec 2012), Epsom salts baths when needed.
