  • any alternatives to waking up in the am???

    Hello as all us ic patients know, caffeine is a huge trigger for ic. I used to enjoy coffee.every morning and now I have cut.this out too. Any suggestions???? Does decaf work? Help!

    Hi, my awareness is that decaffe is as bad as the usual..avoid it as its a bladder irritant!
    Try herbal tea maybe..boring but safer..xx

      waking up in a.m.

      Some people find they can drink low acid coffee.

      A shower wakes me up as does a brisk walk with my dog.

        It's at least partly the acid in coffee that's a problem. I also can drink one cup of low acid coffee in the morning.

          I can now drink up to 2 cups of decaf in the morning. It took many months of abstaining and getting my bladder healed up to get there though.

            I can't tolerate any type of coffee, low acid/no acid/decaf, nothing.
            But, I really have grown to like hot milk with Pero (coffee substitute) mixed in with sugar or Monin vanilla syrup. Sometimes I'll go to Starbucks and get a hot steamed milk and mix my fake coffee in it on the sneak. Makes me feel a bit more normal, because I really love coffee shops and the whole café environment...

            Current treatments:
            -IC diet
            -Elavil 50mg at night
            -Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
            -Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills at night 3-4x per week, more often if needed
            -Pyridium if needed,
            -Pain medicine at bedtime daily, as needed during the day several times per week
            -Antibiotic when doing an instillation to prevent UTI
            -Colace & SmartFiber to treat chronic constipation from meds, Fleet enema as needed
            -Dye Free Benadryl 50 mg at bedtime
            -"Your Pace Yoga: Relieving Pelvic Pain" dvd, walking, treadmill at gym
            -Managing stress= VERY important!
            -Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

              Thank u all for ur help. Im working in accepting the no coffee thing right now as I am newly diagnosed. I did drink a chai latte today and ut didn't bother me much. However, its def not the same as coffee. Happy days to all!
