  • Apple Picking @ local Farm in MA

    Hi All,
my wife Laurie currently suffers from I/C as most here will attest to.

This weekend we are going with our church to go apple picking.
    Macoun, McIntosh,Cortland,Empire.

And these are the varieties they have. Now they have the
(Honey crisp, Macoun, McIntosh, Cortland, Gala, Fuji, Empire ,Jonagold) in there store, but I wanted to get the most from picking the freshest o/c so in the diet list it mentions Gala, Fuji, but not about the others.

So my question is what is the ph of apples in general and what if any are not ic friendly?

She's worried about the consequences of eating or , as we like to do JUICE IT, these items.
I am hoping we can have a fun family day with our church and relatives without stressing out about what we can pick or not pick, please no nose jokes(LOL).

Thank you for your timely responses to this matter.

    James

      apple picking

      Hi James,
First, I wanted to say how nice it is that you're here helping your wife.

I can't answer your question re the ph in apples, but you could probably Google that and get an answer. I will say, for me, Fujis are the only apples I can eat and only in small amounts. As for apple juice, I can't drink that at all, no matter which apples it's made from.

I don't know how diet sensitive your wife is, and unfortunately, with IC, diet decisions can sometimes be a matter of trial, and ufortunately, error. If your wife is pretty diet sensitive, though, she might want to be careful where apples and juices are concerned.

I wish I could be of more help, but I'm sure you'll get many more answers.

Let us know how it goes.

      Laurie

I can't answer your question either, I can't drink any apple juice, or eat a raw apple, but I figured out that I can eat a small amount of cooked apple.

I just cut up a few apples, add a bit of brown sugar, and butter, bake until soft, divide it up and eat plain or on vanillia ice cream.

You could add cinnamon or other spices if your wife can eat them I can't.

        Have fun MG

Thank you all so much for the helpful comments. I did google apple ph and there are a good amount of information.

A PDF link for the list is here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sourc...aShLzw&cad=rja

Sorry about the length. I did peruse the list on this website but needed a bit more information. The above PDF list gives you a line graph of where each food stands and a median point for reference and list cited sources for there information. It is for canning but I know there are a lot of people who like to can and it is a pretty good resource.

So as it stands apples unfortunately are near the highly acidic side , near 1 on the scale. It's funny apples are even more acidic than tomatoes on the list, argh and my wife is Italian and is craving a great pasta sauce. Any low acid tomato recommendations?

Bless you all for your thoughtful and practical advice,

            God Bless,

            James

I was able to eat of my own grown cherry tomatoes without problems. for what ever reason I had to pick and eat them right away.

I have read of a few other people who can eat home grown fresh picked tomatoes.

I never ate them cooked in any way.
