  • Root Beer Chicken Wings

    2 pounds of chicken wings
Salt and pepper to taste and tolerance
1 cup of cafeine free root beer(like Mugs,A&W)
    1/4 cup brown sugar
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 Tablespoon unsulfured black strap molasses(if can tolerate)
1 teaspoon cornstarch (mixed with water to make a runny paste)
    INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
    Grease/spray cookie sheet
Place the wings in a large mixing bowl. Add the salt and white pepper, toss to coat the wings evenly. Place the wings in rows on the cookie sheet, leaving a little space between each wing.
Place the cookie sheet in the preheated 450 degree oven, and bake for 20 minutes. Flip them over and cook for about 10 minutes more.
While they cook combine the root beer, brown sugar, garlic and molasses in a small saucepan. When you drop the sugar into the root beer it will fizz up, it's okay, totally normal. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, whisking as you go along. Once it boils, add the cornstarch mixture. Keep whisking until it thickens then remove from the heat.
Take the wings out of the oven, transfer to a mixing bowl (keep your pan out, the wings are going back in the oven to caramelize) and pour about half the liquid into the bowl. Set the other half aside for dipping wings into.
Now toss the chicken wings in the sauce to coat evenly. Pour them back onto the cookie sheet and spread them out evenly. Place the cookie sheet back in the oven and cook for about 8 to 12 minutes, depending on how crispy you like your wings(about 5 or 6 minutes then flip them and crisp the other side). Remove from oven.
serve the remainder of the sauce for dipping

This sounds like a brilliant idea. I was never one to like mixing sweet with "savory" type food. But with so much good stuff eliminated, I have been experimenting with some success actually. I have been making various things with molasses, honey, maple, and I did Bev's pears sauce with pork last night. This sounds really good. If it works I might make some ahead and take them camping-doing the last step over fire.

Very good recipe! I did leave out the garlic, which is a problem for me (I know that's unusual).

This is brilliant! I miss buffalo chicken wings so much, and even a touch of mild sauce on a grilled chicken sandwich with cheese is enough to bother me. Usually I eat them plain instead, but I can't wait to try this! Thanks!
