  • everything was fine for making oatmeal cookies . . then

so I was getting all the stuff out to make homemade oatmeal cookies with white choc chips and then read the shortening ingredients. contained mono and diglycerides, tbhq and citric acid oops. Thinking those are not good things right? Looked them up but even sites try to confuse you when asking if these kinds of things are "bad" preservatives. Are all preservatives bad? sound like sometimes preservatives or maybe i'm getting confused with food additives . .anyway way too confusing but I'm trying to stay on the strictest diet possible for at least two months and I also started Elmiron today; that's another issue, slight panging has started and I was doing fine.

Anyway all that aside, is it possible to use butter as a shortening substitute? I did find some information about if you do use butter to chill the dough first because butter melts faster than shortening and the cookies would be crisper and I don't really like crispy cookies. So now I ran out of time.

Does anyone know of any recipes for just basic oatmeal cookies without shortening and advice on using butter instead. . . I did a search but nothing really came up. Now nothing for dessert!!
Diagnosed with IC sept. 2008, treatment then was hydrodistension, heparin instills for about 4 months and IC diet; symptoms lasted until sept 2009. Then only a couple of relapses overworking, stress etc. Then completely in remission until Jan. 2016 now pretty much symptom free as of mid august 2016.

Symptoms: overall body aches, dryness feeling at vaginal opening, sitting makes it worse, standing makes it worse, stress makes it worse, no frequency or urgency, worse symptom is at night with panging of uretha/bladder.

    - went on diet, started Cysto Renew 3/31/16 and yoga at least twice a week.
    - tried uribel but really not for my symptoms since it seems it is for frequency and painful urination which I don't have
    - Ativan when needed to relax.
    - Elmiron only took for a couple of days; didn't like it
    - took atarax 1/2 10mg atarax pill at night really helped but gave me nightmares
    - tramadol worked great for back aches
    - generic claritin D worked best for me for calming bladder down and my panging
    - still taking cysto renew 4x a day and believe this and diet helped the most.
    - took dosage of cysto renew down to 2x a day and still ok

I always use butter for baking as a substitute for shortening. It seems to work well for me. I made cookies today.

Great i will try another day, do you notice if the butter makes the cookies crispier? I have a problem with my teeth and would prefer soft cookies.

I don't think it makes a lot of difference. I just don't like the idea of eating shortening.

I have been using coconut oil as a shortening sub. It works well and adds a great flavor. If you don't want the taste, canola oil works too. Shortening is gross! I have also been putting dried blueberries in my oatmeal cookies as a sub for raisins.

thanks all i was able to make them yesterday I did use the butter they turned out great and nice and chewy how i like them. I put white chocolate chips in them. Next time I think i'll add coconut shavings. I'll also try the canola oil, less expensive than butter.

Re: everything was fine for making oatmeal cookies . . then

I was wondering if I could use a
              substitute for oatmeal. Like maybe
              using crunchy granola bars instead.
For no bake cookies. Because tend
              to flare-up with oatmeal.
