What is the difference between this and antacid medicine?
What is the difference between this and antacid medicine?
Having just found this website not long ago this was the first I had heard of this product. I bought some Prelief yesterday and when my husband who is quite knowledgable looked at it he said it looked like an antacid. Obviously there must be a difference or IC'ers would have been touting antacids years ago.

I THINK it has something to do with the difference in how Prelief helps with reducing acid. It is my understanding, and I could be completely wrong, that Prelief actually reduces the acid in the food, while other antacids don't work on the food so much, but on the body after the food is ingested???? Something like that - someone else jump in here who knows what they are talking about...

Diagnosed August 2001
Current IC meds: Elmiron(since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)
Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)
I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I use mostly the Prelief granules. And yes, I do put it in food before I eat (or drink) it. It helps reduce the acid in the food so it doesn't irritate. I can even have a morning cup of coffee if I sprinkle Prelief granules in it.

I love coffee so much, but I have given it up for the past two weeks, even though I was using the deacidified kind (Kava), because I kept having pain. Are you able to drink coffee with the prelief granules even when you are in a flare situation?
Prelief is not an antacid; it is a food acid neutralizer. Prelief does to the acid in food what Sanka and DeCaf do to the undesired caffeine in coffee: it removes it. Prelief removes the acid in the food prior to consumption (Prelief Granulate) or, at your option, after/while the food is consumed (Prelief Tablets).
Prelief which is calcium glycerophosphate, will dissolve easily and completely in foods and beverages without changing the taste.
Prelief contains no sodium and no aluminum. Its calcium provides approximately 130 mg of elemental calcium per 2 Prelief tablets or packets. The calcium in Prelief is ionically bound, not covalently bound as is calcium carbonate (Tums), and is therefore 100% available to the body in about 30 seconds, vs up to 30 minutes in Tums.
Finally, unlike all antacids, Prelief is classified as a dietary supplement, not a drug. There is no practical limit to the amount of Prelief that can be taken although we suggest 30 or 40 tablets a day as a limit simply to "have a limit".
30 -40 tablets a day ???????
Holly Cow..how many tablets are you suppost 2 take before each meal !!??
I'll take abaut 2 to 3 tablets before every meal.
Is that enough ??
If I WANT TO EAT A NO NO FOOD like Tomato, Pizza etc, I'll take maybe 5 tab.

If what you're taking is preventing flares, then it's enough. The maximum amount you shouldn't exceed --- ever --- is not suggested dosage. It's just that you "might" have a problem if you taken more than that. You shouldn't need anywhere near that amount.

We recommend 2 Prelief tablets or packets with every meal, snack, and beverage. Because tolerance to food varies greatly as does the acid content of food, you may find that you need to use more tablets than recommended. Additionally some foods/beverages (like orange juice) are more resistant to a pH change. There is no practical limit to the amount of Prelief that can be taken. Experiment with the number of tablets or packets that do the job for you. Prelief is not a drug, it can be used with every meal, every day.
