  • Can someone tell me how to use Prelief

It's funny, I bought the Prelief and don't have a clue how to use it. Should I just take this during a flare? If so...how many times? Or is it more of a daily pill?

The doctor's don't recommend this medicine (at least mine haven't so far) so I'm not convinced any of my doctor's would know how to advise me on how to use this product.

I take Omeprazole (stomach acid reducer) because I take Naproxen a lot for periods and headaches. So I'm wondering if Omeprazole is similar to Prelief or if Prelief is primarily for urinary issues. I would assume if Prelief is similar to other acid reducers that doctors would recommend it. So confused!

I realize that there may be no answers here but it's worth a shot.

    Thanks in advance.
    Frances

Some doctors are recommending Prlief for their IC patients. The way I use it is I take two tablets before any meal if I think there might be anything in the meal that might be a trigger for me. I take the two tablets immediately before I take the first bite of the meal.

When I was having a bad flare I would take it (2 pills) before anything I ate. I can't stand Tums so I just used Prelief. I think they about do the same thing (for me) during a bad flare. It helps with the frequency for me.

Now that I am mostly over my first flare I am only taking them before something new I eat. Yesterday I had pizza dough for example for the first time since IC so I took 2 right before. When I get to try small ammount of the 'no-no' foods down the road I am probably going to take 4-6 before each just in case.

Oddly enough I was using Prelief even before my bladder issues for acid reflux because it worked better than Pepcid for me.

Thank you all so much! I'm going to try two pills before everything I eat and see how it goes. I seem to be having a lot of flares these days and I'm praying this takes the edge off.

Beware it can cause constipation and C can cause flares.

I think at this point pretty much anything and everything can cause a flare though.

Prelief causes flares too?! Good grief. Sometimes I wonder if I just don't eat for a few days...what would happen to my bladder. Hmmm....

I don't think she meant that prelief itself causes a flare but if you get constipated from too much prelief (it is calcium) then it could cause a flare. I know I will get constipated from too much calcium so I have to make sure I'm also getting enough magnesium to offset the calcium. Toto - lol- you made me laugh. Yes everything causes a flare and I've also thought about what would happen if I didn't eat for a day or even go on a fast. Hmmm

Earthlady...fasting crossed my mind. I'm serious. However, then I'll get a migraine!

I had no idea about the calcium and constipation and am so glad your brought it up. For some reason I thought that only infants got constipation from calcium. I never thought about adults. I have troubles with IBS (not severe) and this is something I'm going to look into. (I haven't gotten treatment for IBS) Perhaps managing the IBS a bit more will help.

I am on my second bottle of Prelief now. It seems to work well for me. I tried taking them right before I eat but it didn't work as well as taking them nearly 1/3 - half way through my meal. I usually take 2 pills per meal. I can eat practically everything. I do have constipation problem but I've pretty much always had the problem from time to time. One way to combat this constipation problem is to gulp down a 16 oz warm water first thing in the morning right after you wake up. It really helps.

                          Good Morning!

I have been out of the office for a while and I am just catching up on e-mails and postings!

Prelief is AkPharma's brand name for calcium glycerophosphate. Prelief is a safe, effective over-the-counter dietary supplement that takes the acid out of acidic food and beverages. Food acid can cause heartburn/reflux; the acid in food can also irritate the bladder, causing urgency, frequency, and/or pain. Prelief works on food acid; it is a food acid reducer. Omeprazole suppresses stomach acid; Tums also works on stomach acid.

Our suggested usage is to take 2 Prelief tablets with each meal and snack. More can be used as needed. I always suggest taking a few bites of food first and then taking the Prelief. A few IC patients have complained of a stomach upset when taking Prelief on an empty stomach.

I hope this information is helpful.........

I use prelief all the time. Even if it is something that has a hint of acid in it. I take 3 or 4 at a time, sometimes more. I have never gotten constipated from it, but some people do.

                            Good luck.

I noticed from the Prelief rep. that Omeprazole takes away acid. I actually take that med to stop stomach problems from Naproxen. (potential problems that is) I'm wondering if I even need to take Prelief if I already take Omeprazole. Or does the Prelief act differently? I'm confused. If anyone has the answer would much appreciate the info!
