  • Will insurance cover home instillations?

I want to try the instillations, yet much prefer to do them at home. Will insurance cover the cost of the medications and supplies? Paying for them as prescriptions sounds pricey; whereas if it's done in the office, I'd just have a copay. Obviously this will be particular to my insurance, just wanting to know the general situation.

Some insurances will cover under the medication section; if you're considering this option, I suggest you check with your company.

My insurance is covering them after an appeal by my doctor's office. They are proscribing a cocktail of Bupivicaine, Lidocaine, BiCarbonate, Gentamycin. I'm not sure of the quantities. I'm getting my first one done on Tuesday with teaching for doing it myself. I can't wait as I sit squirming in my chair.

Can these instillations also be used to gently distend the bladder or would that be too painful without anesthesia. Sadly, my capacity has shrunk again. Right after the prior distension my capacity was nearly 400 ml. It's also possible that without the pain, my capacity will bounce back on it's own.

Sometimes pain can make it feel like the bladder is smaller than it actually is. How long has it been since your hydrodistention?

I have done many self instillations --- if you come up with questions, I'll certainly try to help.
