Hi all, I'm a newby and just had my first instillation today (heparin and lidocaine). Starting within an hour of the instillation, I started vomiting - and was violently ill for 3 hours afterwards. I hadn't eaten anything and feel okay now so can't imagine it was a bug or food poisoning. Can this sort of reaction be caused by an instillation? Thanks

It's very possible the reaction was caused by severe stress. I know that emotions can cause nausea. If you were extremely nervous about the instillation, that could have been the cause. I doubt it was food poison or a bug if it's gone already. Did the instillation help any with the pain?
Warm hugs,

Not knowing ahead of time could be more stressful than being able to plan for it. Will you be having more instillation treatments? Sometimes it can take several before any improvement.

I agree with mothergoose. Definitely talk to your doc about your reaction. You could be having a reaction to the heparin or lidocaine----------------------------------------------------
My blog on IC, adoption, and academia: the garlic whisperer
Diagnosed Jan 2013. Currently taking:
200mg Elmiron morning and night
25mg Elavil at night (no drowsiness or weight gain)
culturelle in the morning
SLIT drops for allergies (environmental) 3 drops/night under the tongue
zyrtec 24 hour nightly (recommended by uro)
Instillations 3x/week: Parson's Solution
uribel and prelief as needed
Also took Desert Harvest Aloe (3 in the morning and 3 at night) for a year and had great luck.
No longer need them, so I only take them during flares.

Re: Very sick after first instillation
I've learned that the stomach and the bladder are closely related. I believe they have a set of nerve fibers in common (or nerves that are realtively close to one another) and do something called "cross-talking". When one set of nerves flare up it can typically affect the other set (which is why when I am having an IC flare I will some times experience an IBS flare and vice versa). maybe the instillation is causing a bladder spasm or some other type of reaction that is crossing over to your stomach? Just a guess. I am about to get my first instillation so I am hoping I don't experience any major side effects. I hope you feel better.- Started with nocturia 10 years ago then slowly progressed into full blown IC about 6 years ago.
- Officially diagnosed in 2012 after undergoing a cystoscopy.
- Experience urgency/frequency/burning/pain.
- Wake up 4-10 times (on average) per night to urinate.
- Urinate between 20-40 times a day total
- Tried Elmiron with no success.
- 10mg Amitryptiline helps occasionally (for sleep) but generally turns me into a zombie.
- Prelief has little effect.
- Azo/Uristat as needed, but has little effect.
- Tried IC friendly diet for one year with no success.
- Tried Detrol and Vesicare, but only made the pain worse.
