  • Can bladder heal on its own with diet

    HI ALL

AFTER NOT BEING ABLE TO TAKE ELMERON ORALLY I TRIED ELMERON INSTILL. MADE ME VERY SICK. SAME SIDE EFFECTS AS ORAL MEDICATION. I WAS DOING VERY WELL WITH JUST FOLLOWING DIET.
IT IS NECESSARY TO TREAT BALDDER WITH MEDS OR CAN IT HEAL ON ITS ON WITH DIET?

OF COUSE IF I HAVE A FLARE MY DR WILL GIVE ME MEDS TO JUST HELP FLARE

If you're doing well with just diet, I don't see a problem with that. Unfortunately, we don't know how to cure interstitial cystitis, but we can usually avoid further irritation. Most of the time I don't take anything for my IC --- I do strictly avoid ingesting any of my trigger foods and drinks.

I do have meds on hand for flares.

do u use the ic diet? do u make all your own food ?i have read a lot of labels. a lot had vinegar and citrus acid. so I watch carfefully. I cut out a lot by using ic diet.. today I bought corn bread and saw it had a little citrus acid. couldn't believe it..

I am a firm believer your body can heal. Try and stick with alkalizing foods instead of too many acids. An external wound won't heal if you keep aggravating it and same with your bladder. Do what works for you but it certainly wouldn't hurt to eat well.

Yes, I use the IC diet. At the time I was diagnosed not much thought had been given to a diet connection so I found my diet triggers on my own --- and interestingly, the foods that are bad for me are on the foods to avoid list and my bladder friendly ones match pretty well with the food list at the link in my signature. I guess you could say I developed my diet the hard way. I do keep a copy of the food list handy and still refer to it frequently if I want to try new things.

Re: Can bladder heal on its own with diet

I do not think diet alone can heal the bladder since that is not what is causing the issue in the first place. It can help to avoid foods though that can irritate an already irritated bladder. I think to actually heal the bladder, you have to get to the root cause of what is causing the IC ( whether it be bacterial, viral, immune deficiency) and likely it is all three. Diet can help, but no, it wont cure IC unless your IC is caused by a food allergy, if that is the case then avoiding that food can heal the bladder. IC is not usually caused by foods though. It can be aggravated by them, but not caused by them. I was on the IC diet before I even got IC so food did not play a role in my IC. Interestingly, when I was taking the low dose antibiotics awhile back to help prevent UTI's, it helped my IC a lot. I was able to then consume more foods( because my tissue was able to heal due to the antibiotics). Diet alone does not help my bladder at all. In fact my bladder can be killing me even if I do not eat at all.

Re: Can bladder heal on its own with diet

Thanks abri. was doing exceptional with diet. Till I had bladder instill on the 18th.....oral elmeron. Made me sick. And instill on the 18th....really has set me back. Dr said yesterday that it may take another week for my bladder swelling to go down.
But diet is key for me..thanks again
