  • Getting first bladder instillation on Friday, what to expect?

I'm 17 and was diagnosed with ic maybe a month ago. I'm getting my first bladder instillation on Friday and I'm terrified. I know there's a catheter involved which is what I'm scared of. I had to have a very small catheter put in for a urodynamic test and it HURT. This catheter is going to be even bigger and I can't even imagine the pain. My doctor said that the nurse will put a little lidocaine jelly on it, do you think that will help any? I'm going to have to learn to self catheterize soon as I have retention issues and I'm scared this will scare me away from learning.

I suggest you ask them to use a small size catheter. If you can manage to relax, it helps make it easier. When I have anything inserted into my urethra, I concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply and consciously relaxing my muscles. After you have a few instillations, it does get easier --- and when you learn to do your own, you can use the smallest size catheters available.

Do you know what they will be putting in the instillation solution?

    Sending welcoming hugs,
    Donna

It went very well. The first one I got I barely felt at all. My mom said she wish she had videotaped my face because the entire time I was like "is she even putting it in?". The second one I got was a bit more painful but sill no where to compare to the one I had months ago. I'm on my way to get my third now.
