  • Confusion about DMSO

First off, it saved me back in 2013 when my IC was severe. I remember reading warnings about it back then. I have very infrequent flares since, having one now.

Donna, you are wonderful. You send people to the AUA gudelines link when they bring up DMSO, and yet that link has it as the only FDA approved instillation medication. I know my doc is going to suggest this when I see him, but it still makes me wary. Could you explain more about why this is not a preferred treatment for you?

It's been so long that all of my supplements were expired, prelief and Desert Harvest aloe. Unfortunately I have another 10 days before I can get the aloe. Lesson learned. I was on an unrestricted diet with the exception of orange juice and all things cranberry. I know I am one of the lucky ones.

    Re: Confusion about DMSO

If you were helped by DMSO five years ago, it could very well help again. However, if you opt for DMSO, I suggest you talk with your doctor to be sure the solution instilled is no more than 25% DMSO --- it's with higher concentrations that some muscle damage has happened. There are now some solutions being used that are actually soothing and many doctors prefer using those. It's my understanding that Rimso 50 is 50% DMSO --- so, according to the study, it needs to be further diluted.

When I was first treated with DMSO, it was extremely painful for two or three days after every treatment. I was ready to say no more when I woke up one morning and realized I had slept through the night for the first time in years. Later, when lidocaine was added to the mix, that helped lessen the pain --- and it still helped with frequency.

There aren't many treatment options approved specifically for IC, but there are a lot that help many of us.

I hope you feel better soon.

    Sending gentle hugs,
    Stay safe
