  • Surgery and heparin installations?

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone did heparin bladder installations and was advised to stop them before surgery? I have some surgery coming up in a few weeks but I have been doing weekly installations of a heparin and sodium bicarbonate solution. I know heparin can be a blood thinner but since it is contained in the bladder, do I need to discontinue a week before the surgery? Has anyone had surgery and was advised to do this? I'm not sure it actually even gets into your bloodstream from the bladder.

I did heparin instillations, but didn't have surgery while I was on them. I kind of agree with you, but I think the best thing to do is to telephone the surgeon's office and ask --- that way you'll know for sure. I hope the surgery is a minor one and that you do well.
