  • urethral stricture/dilation?

    Hi all.

I go in for heparin instills once every four weeks. While I knew I had stricture when they did my first cystoscopy (so it was not from cathing), I have not had any trouble from it before, except difficulty getting the cath in for the DMSO. That was back in '95.
When I began the heparin this last fall, I had no trouble with the cath. Then I went in Tuesday and, guess what, the cath won't go in. At all.
So they dilated my urethra right there with no anesthetic at all (wasn't that fun!) and then instilled the heparin.
Well, that was a couple of days ago and I am still having a lot of problems. I have pain with urination, and to be rather blunt, pain if any part of my vulva is touched so that the urethra may be touched or the skin around it pulled.

My question is, is this normal?? Is it normal to be dilated without even lidocaine??
Should I still be having these symptoms, and what can I do for them? My pain is usually strictly in the bladder, I only have urethral symptoms when cathed, and never like this. I can't even wipe without going into spasms.
Oh, and I am allergic to the anti-spasmodic drugs, and Pryidium. etc.

Sorry to make such a long post. I have been dealing with this for a long time now, and this is a new one for me. I am getting really discouraged at the moment.....

    Hi G,

You should speak to your uro! A few weeks back I had a horrible experience with a catheter being placed by a new tech - my urethra bled for the first time ever, and I was in pain for a few days. I was told to take pyridium plus for one week. My symptoms improved as my urethra healed from the trauma.

Whenever I am cathed, I am always numbed - make sure you INSIST upon this at your next visit/treatment....

    Have a great weekend,

I had a series of dilations when I was first diagnosed. Each one left me sore for a few days.

Oh my goodness!! They didn't even put lidocaine there before doing it??? I had it done but in the hospital knocked out. I was in pain for about 1 week and then sore for a little bit longer. I would call your Uro and tell them what is going on. They should at least give you some lidocaine to put in down there if nothing else. Wow, you sure were brave having that done with out anything for it. Hope you get to feeling better.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.
I did contact my uro yesterday - when they finally callled back, they said pain, bleeding, etc. was normal. They usually give Pyridium for it; but since I'm allergic, they told me, and I quote "You are kind of screwed". (No Kidding??)
So I am to take my codeine and wait. I am slowly seeing improvement - I'm just glad to know this is normal and I didn't tear something or anything.
And I would have KILLED to have been put to sleep (or at least given pain meds) for that procedure, lol!! My uro does not believe in that (he did my cysto that way too, no pain meds).
At least they said I can have lidocaine next time, "since I had such a hard time". Do they expect it NOT to hurt??? GRRRR....
