  • marcaine and heparin??

Today my uro put me on a marcain/heparin cocktail instilled once everyday - by myself!! Ok I am all freaked out about self-cathing. The nurse used a mirror and "taught" me what to look for etc...Any advice from those of you who do it regularly? Any positions better than others or locations better than other? Please help - any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

I'm sure that someone will post. Many do their own cath's. I think they said the tub was a good place. Hang in there for someone. Hugs, Kathi

i do the same type of treatments one to three times a day. the most important thing to do is relax and it doesnt hurt. take a deep breath in when you are putting the cath in and you hardly will fill it i sit on the tolit and do mine less messy. but if you dont relax the medicine will not go in.
I have also let my husband give me treatments I lay on the bed while he does it. just make sure to keep everything clean. and wash your hands with some type of anti bat. killer. if you want to know something more please pm me.
Medicine taken daily or as needed:
      1. Heaprin and Marcaine rescue installment 1 to 3x daily as needed.
      2. MS.Cotin 100mg 3x daily
      3. MSIR 30mg 1 or 2 every 4-6hrs as needed for breakthrew pain.
      4. Fentanyl 100 mg Change every 48hrs.
      5. Gentamicin 80mg install after each rescue treatment
5 Leviquin 500mg self start as needed.
      6. Klonopin 1 or 2 daily as needed.
      7. Prosed/DS as 1 every 6hrs as needed.

I think everyone has their own preferences in positions for self cathing. I found the easiest way for me is to put a mirror on the front side of the toilet stool and a flashlight on the floor so I can see what I'm doing. I then put one foot on the side of the toilet seat so I can see to insert the catheter. It flows directly into the toilet so there's no mess.

Careful handwashing is the most important thing.

        Sending an encouraging hug,
        Donna

Like everything else, it gets easier with practice, so don't get frustrated if it takes awhile at first. Lidocaine gel on the cather helps to control any urethral irritation also.

            Heparin and marcain instillations

I have had bladder problems since the age of 3; I am now 44 years old. I feel as though I have some level of pain daily. I am as well terrified of catheters, because of a childhood surgery for dialation. I am supposed to go with my boyfriend of 8 yrs to learn to do the self cathereterization with the bladder instillations of heparin and marcain tomorrow. I guess I am more nervous about everything that this entails including both doctor and boyfriend working on my private parts and the modesty that I won't have and not to leave out the pain and irritation during and afterwards. I feel as though I am going to do this because I cannot deal with the pain, I basically have not pain tolerance whatsoever. Any words of wisdom to offer me at this point?

I understand your fears tsloper i had a lot of bladder surgery as a small child and was scared to dealth of cath. until i figure out Hey this isn't to bad its in and out and after its out i get relief. and with i.c the most important thing is relief from pain.
I now don't even have to use a mirror i stand over a tolit empty my bladder out put the medicine in throw the cath away clean up and i'm done.
the most important things is to try to stay calm. and remember this should help you.

b.t.w to the ICN family i'm glad you found us. we are here for you we understand.

                marcaine & heparin vs DMSO

I had the DMSO instilled only 1 time and that experience was enough to keep me from doing it again. When I arrived for the appointment I was already irritated from the IC and then when it came time for the cath, I asked if that was it on the tray and it was big, at least in my eyes. I also asked if I could be numbed and was told no. So the nurse proceeded to put it in. It hurt really bad and when the nurse was done she just said you can go home now. But I truely believe that I was in shock of some sorts, because I was freezing and at the same time I had sweat rolling off of me. I drove and far as I could which was probably only in about 15 minutes. I was on fire. So I'm scared of all procedures, because I usually leave in more pain than what I started. So hopefully this experience will be different. Today I'm going to see a urogynecolgyst (? spelling) at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC, she is not a believer in pain meds. I have asked what would be the ideal quality of life for a 44 yr with a 10 yr and 22 yr and single parenting for the little one. I have a job and boyfriend, I am expected to be able to maintain a healthy relationship and be reliable for my job and my kids and when the IC spirals out of control. I can't be any of those things. I enjoy sex and I often ask myself why do I keep doing this because the pain the next day is debilitating and 99% of the time I have an infection. But I'm still young and supposedly in the prime of my life; and want to hope that it will be different, but it never turns out that way. So hopefully this will be a positve experience and I or boyfriend will be able to do this to eleviate the pain. Pray for me today....Thanks for your input... will let you know how it goes.

                Terri
