  • I had my first bladder instill and now stinging pain in the urethra

My doctor wants me to call him back to see how the instill works. If it works well he will give me a prescription to perform them at home. I wanted to know when the urethral burning will go awa?y and how to tell if you have progressed if you still have the burning. It seems like the burning can cause bladder frequency. It seems like it would be hard to get an accurate assesment of the progression
Diagnosed with IC October 2009- through bladder biopsy (no glomerations or hunners ulcers found, just irritation)

    I have moderate-severe IC

Currently stopped taking all medications due to pregnancy

Do you know what was in the instillation? Contents can make a huge difference.

I agree with donna, your uro may have to find a instil that will work for you. When I have my instils I get no burning at all.

Sometimes the first few instillations can cause temporary irritation --- if you don't feel better very soon, I suggest you ask to be checked for infection.

          Warm hugs,

thanks. I slept better last night. I only got up one time. Im not sure if to tell him to order the prescption for me to do it at home or not. Is it one of those things that doesnt always work right away? Like does it take some time like DMSO? It really wasnt that convincing for me. I think I was flaring for a while. I was planning on doing mine 3 times a week.

Hope you are getting relief by now.. I just had my first DMSO this morn.. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.. but holding it for 20 min was agony.. I did exercise with legs up in the air. like biking and anything to distract my mind..The nurse never came back to let me know the time was up.. Thank God I had my husband with me.. 20 mins up- I grabbed the sheet and ran to the bathroom which was out side the room and one door down so I had to go into the hall...It burned...but felt so good to let that go lol

I put on a depends because it is 30 min drive home..got dressed and went to the desk to make my next app.. They just were very busy today..so that is why she did not get back to me...Some glad I had my husband there to keep me company.. Next time we will take our own timer lol..sheesh

So far I am doing fine..the feeling of having to pee constantly has let up..

We are getting a Nor'easter storm here// Some glad I got the procedure out of the way and can stay cozy at home...
              Take care

I think maybe it helped some. I only got up one time last night to urinate. and Im feeling ok today not really alot of urgency nor frequency so maybe i will ok the doc for the prescription. Try it at least for a month. The only difference is he used heparin cause thats all he had but really he wants me to use one elmiron capsule. instead of heparin

Do you mean Elmiron capsule into bladder?
I could not take Elmiron orally-made me sick and gave me diarrhea.

I seem to be doing fine since the first DMSO--In fact I feel better then I did this morning before going into the hospital for the treatment.

                  I sure hope it lasts..

I have been doing home instillations for several years. Lidocaine/heparin. I personally have not had probems the the instills are totally effective for me. Dr. Dell says about 80% of people who do instillations find relief of symptoms. That being said..if the instillations are not worth the pain or the results are not that good..you may be in the 20%..

You might try using lidocaine gel to help with the burnig on the outside. The technique for actally inserting the catheter can sometimes cause probalems. The size of the catheter may also be a problem. I use an 8fr x25" pediatric feeding tube. It is much smaller than catheters normally used.

Dr. Dell said if you can hold the instill for 20 mins you would get positive effects.

Don't hesitate to post. There are tons of people here that will be glad to give suggestions for managing IC.
