  • dwell time question, asap

    Hi,
I'm scheduled for my first instill today at 2pm.
The nurse who does the instills said the doctors she works with use a dwell time of two hours, which seems like a long time to me, especially since I go every 1/2 hour or so and the last time I was cathed to check for UTI (didn't have one), I had to pee after 5 minutes and then every 10 minutes after that.
    Any opinions?
    Thanks
    Laurie

It can depend on what solution is being instilled.

That solution should numb your bladder pretty well. My uro has always said you can hold as long as you can hold it! The longer is better but if you can't, what else can you do? For me, the longer I do instills the longer I can hold them. Now, I don't even think aobut it at all.

I hope you have good results with the instill,
        Sandra

It may be that the lidocaine will help enough that you can hold it with no problem.

            dwell time

            Thanks Sandra and Donna.
The instill went well and I only needed to hold it in my bladder for 30 minutes, which is exactly the time it takes to get from Kaiser to my house.
As it turned out, my bladder was numb enough that I was able to stand outside and talk to my neighbor for 10 minutes before I voided the solution. Well see what happens when the lido. wears off, but so far so good.

                Hi,
I agree and from what the nurse told me today, so does the AUA. She said the new protocol that they are suggesting to doctors is 20 minutes.
Anway, I seem to be doing okay with this instill. A little burning, but not too bad. Now if I could just stop peeing for 10 minutes, that would be great! I guess that will calm down after a while.

I could never hold it any longer then 2o -- It was very hard for me to keep it in for 15 mins... My husband was my coach and I would have my legs in air doing bicycle movements or spreading legs or going from side to side-- anything to keep it in.. the nurse always just left hubby and I alone once she had put it in..

The bathroom was out side the room -- time up--- I would grab the sheet and run into the hall to get to the bathroom lol -one time part of the sheet went into the toilet.. lol
