I was just wondering if you had talked with your doctor about the retention after an instill. My instills are lidocaine/heparin. I ususally do them at bedtime so i can get a good night's sleep. Dr Dell said the benefit of the chemicals is mainly during the frist 20 mins. He likes for the instills to be held 20 mins but only if you are comfortable. If you are in pain he doesn't want me to hold the instill. He told me it I could hold the instill as long as I wanted BUT instill ingredients can be different. Talk with your dotor about the retention problem.

    An early happy bday.

For me it is the cathing that causes me problems, it happens evrytime I get cathed.

I agree with the previous post, talk to your dr. maybe they need to try different meds in the instill, and or a smaller cath, maybe just freezing in the urethra for the cathing and not the freezing in te bladder.

I don't know I can't have the instills because of the retenion issues, but I really wish I could so many people get a lot of help from them. I won't give up just yet, but I would diffinatley ask for a different combo, and maybe not hold it for so long this time before you try to pee. Maybe if you go sooner, you will be able to pee and build up the lenght of time you can hold it down the road.

Good luck let us know how you make out. If it was me I would take a heating pad or something of the sort for the long drive home.

I would also ask for a few ativan or something like that, I don't take it very often but it can stop the bladder spasams in there tracks and sometimes it is the spasams that cause the retention.

    retention after instill

    Hi Lynn,
An instill on your birthday just doesn't seem fair!

You might want to ask your doctor exactly what he's putting into his cocktail. Sometimes a change in the mix can make a big difference in how well you tolerate the instills.

Good luck, and Happy Birthday Tuesday!

    Hi Laurie,

The instillation had steriod, pain killer and a bladder repairer in it. Not sure of the names. I'm still having problems. I haven't been the same since I had it done! My next appointment is Tuesday for another one but I don't want to do it! I have talked to my doctor a couple of times on the phone. He did put me on an antibiotic just in case I was starting to get a UTI since I am feeling so bad. (He is an hour and half drive away and couldn't check my urine). Bummer is....Tuesday is my birthday. Great birthday, huh? Grrr!

I hope you are feeling better and able to pee now. How's your dog doing?
    Hi Belleruth,
My goodness, you sound like you're having a hard time. What did your doctor instill?

My retention cleared up after about 24 hours or so, but my bladder is very sore, much more so than after my first instill. I think I'll give it one more try and if I am as sore as I am now, I'll have to have a talk with my uro.

Our dog is so-so, thanks for asking. The vet is not sure what's causing his rear leg weakness so she put him on Neurontin(sp?),oral, and Adequan injectable and we'll see. He doesn't seem to be too unhappy, so that's a plus.

I hope you start to feel better and that you can get in touch with your doctor very soon. Retention is not a good thing.

    Keep us posted,
    Laurie

    retention after instill

Thanks, MG. The retention seems to be easing up now. I think I just panic whenever I can't go. I always think, irrationaly, that I'm not going to go back to "normal".

started a topic retention after instill

    retention after instill

    Hi,
    I had my second instill today-Lido, Bi-Carb, Heparin(sp?).
The first one went well, with very little discomfort during or afterwards.
So today I felt very confident and enthusiastic about my second treatment. Unfortunately, this one did not go as well. The nurse, who has already cathed me twice and seems very good,(gentle and kind, with good hands), had a very hard time getting the cath into my bladder. She said there was a lot of resistance, and my urethra has an unusual twist to the left, which makes it hard to get the cath where it needs to go,(though she didn't have any trouble the other times). I'm not sure what the problem was, maybe my bladder was in spasm or something, but Dawn spent a really long time getting to where she needed to be.
Needless to say, I'm pretty sore after all of that, but that's not my main problem. What's bothering me, really more than just bothering me, is that I am having a hard time urinating, a problem I did not have last time. I'm going little bits, but I feel like there's more that needs to come out, and my bladder feels pretty hard to me, which usually indicates urine is present. Everytime I get up from the toilet, I have to sit back down, and am running in every five minutes. I'm trying to drink more so there will be more pressure to push the urine out,(a nurse showed me that once), but so far it hasn't worked.
I really don't want to have to go back to Kaiser tomorrow, and actually can't until the afternoon because, and I know this is going to sound dumb, our dog is having a hard time with his hind legs and has very suddenly developed an odd weakness in his hind quarters which is causing him to fall backwards down our stairs and kind of flop all over the place,(though he can walk and run and does not appear to be in pain), soooo, we are taking him to the vet first thing in the morning,(she has very limited hours this week). I guess my priorities are kind of screwed up here, but he's in our hands and we have to care for him.
Anyway, I digress. What I want to know,(took the long way to get here!), is, has anyone else had retention after an instill, and if so, what did you do and how long did it last?
In the meantime, I'm hoping this will ease up by morning, otherwise, I might have to see the vet!
Thanks for reading this and for any input.
    Laurie
