  • Had First Instillation, now have more burning

I had my first instillation today and felt fine afterwards. I was able to hold the solution for about 45 minutes. Now, I've had constant burning and have the urge to go all the time. Is this normal after the first instillation or do I need to contact the urologist?

It can depend on what was in the solution instilled. If it was DMSO, that one can cause pain for a day or two. At any rate, if the burning doesn't go away very soon, I suggest you call.

I had the instill done at 12:30 today, peed it out at 1:30 and have had the burning and urge to go since. The urologist office is closed now. What should I do to get me through the night?

I just went to the bathroom and that helped a little. I've read in a few places it's normal to have some discomfort the first day. Maybe drinking a lot of water to give me a flush would help?

I don't know what time it is where you are, but if you don't feel better by evening, you might give the office a call. There should be someone on call for the night who can respond to your concerns.

I'm feeling a little bit better. I will try calling and see if there is someone I can talk to though. Thank you

The burning is slowly calming down, now it's more of a got to go feeling. I'm drinking some water to see if that helps. I'm guessing having a cathader in can cause some pain. I've never had one in before. I tried calling the urologist, but they don't have an on call number. I suppose I'd have to call the hospital in order to talk to whichever one is on call. I guess I'll have to see how I feel in the morning and go from there. I thought that this instillation thing would bring immediate relief, but I suppose it works differently for everyone. The instillation was heparin, lidocaine and something I can't remember the name of.

Re: Had First Instillation, now have more burning

Well, last night was horrible. I had a lot of burning. It felt like my urethra was on fire. I took some ibuprofen and pyridium and that helped. If I slept, it wasn't for long. I feel better this morning, but still have some irritation. I called the urologist and talked to the nurse who did the instillation. She said I shouldn't be feeling like this at all. The urologist's assistant isn't in till the first of the week, but the nurse is sending her a message. I don't know if she checks them when she's out or not. I'm guessing she does because I'm sure there are instances where patients need help. So, we are not going to do anymore installations and I'm now waiting to hear from the urologist' office as to what the next step is. I do feel quite a bit better this morning, but still have some burning and discomfort. I guess I'm one of the lucky few who don't respond to the treatment positively. I'm pretty disappointed and am feeling let down, not to mention my anxiety is a bit elevated because of all of this.

Baby girl...I know this is an old thread, but I was checking to see if you stuck with the instills. I have the same reaction after the instills. Increased frequency with very little output and the urge to keep urinating. Sometimes it tingles. This will calm down after awhile. My nurse said your bladder goes into a little shock at first. Oh...I take a uribel before hand and drink lots of water. Hope your well!
