  • IV nutrition therapy - safe for IC? Also - licorice supplement?

I was diagnosed with IC when I was 17, so I've had it for 24 years. It has been very bad for the last 6 years and pretty much nothing helps. 10 months ago I started having severe stomach issues (I have other health issues than just the IC, a lot of them actually) and basically have been unable to eat much of anything since then. I've lost 60 lbs from starvation. I now have a few foods I can eat (rice, potato, chicken, egg, and watermelon) but I am not absorbing any nutrients at all. I saw a naturopath today because I am giving up on the doctors. She says that I need to get IV nutrition therapy because I am completely malnourished (I've had blood work that shows this - my vitamin D level is almost 0) but they have vitamin C in them so I am scared to try it. I know my body cannot heal when I have no nutrition or vitamins in my system but I've had it drilled in my head that vitamin C is the devil for IC. She also wants me to take something called DGL - some kind of licorice supplement because my entire digestive tract is severely inflamed. Apparently it could help. Does anyone know if this is safe for IC? All the doctors have given me so many different drugs over the last 10 months and my body rejects everything. I end up way sicker every time I try to take anything. It's like my body has given up. I do feel that if I cannot get some help I will die within the next year. I don't want to die. Any help is appreciated.

P.S. In case it is important I am going to quickly list my other diagnosis - hyperthyroidism, PCOS, parahyperthyroidism, IC, GERD, eczema, gastritis, bile reflux, a still being investigated autoimmune disease, hypoglycemia, and severe nutritional deficiencies across the board

I have taken vitamin D for years and it has never bothered my IC. There's a vitamin available in the ICN Shop that was developed specifically for IC patients --- I suggest you review its contents and ask your naturopathic physician if that could help. The only other thing I can think of is to keep a detailed diary to see if you can identify things you can tolerate --- and please do share with your naturopath. And since you just started working with her, I think it would be a good idea to work with her --- I hope you will find some things to help you feel better.

    Warm hugs,

Yes, you have very big problems with the assimilation of vitamins and other useful substances, have you tried to get vitamins by artificial means? by type of antibiotics - multivitamin and other tablets.Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant known for strengthening the immune system. Vitamins D and E boost immunity, too.Vitamins B1, B2, B6, K1, Niacin (B3), CoQ10 and magnesium, all play a role in cardiovascular health. Thanks in large part to the Vitamin B family, taking a multivitamin is associated with a boost in energy levels, feelings of well being, as well as a decrease in stress and anxiety.therefore, I would advise you to use multivitamins.
