  • Different statins-different results

Just finished an interesting group of studies on the different statins and results. Here is what I learned in a nutshell:
The oldest and most studied is Lovastatin or Mevacor. Mevacor and Pravecol have the lowest rates of muscular problems. Lipitor and Zocor are in the middle and crestor was the highest.
Pravecol or Pravestatin was shown to have kidney protective effects in a study of individuals with kidney damage. It also reduced inflammation markers. Zocor had a study done and the results showed also that it reduced bodily inflammations.
Lipitor seriously reduced CQ-10 and any and all statins should be taken with CQ-10 to be on the safe side. The other statins reduced it less, Crestor the most.
Crestor actually reduced and reversed arterial plaque in a study. A lot of doctors like this drug even though it had a high rate of muscular problems connected with it. Apparently it is safer at lower levels of dosage and problems occured in the higher end of the dosage scale.
Statins as a group also showed lowering of occular pressure, possible reduction in colon cancer and is currently being looked at in relation to other cancers. All statins are anti-inflammatory and that is probably why the also have an effect on inflammatory disease states in addition to lowering cholesterol, LDL and increasing HDL.
Anyway there seemed to be a lot of misunderstanding regarding statins, add the type of statin you are on and if it helped, hurt, or was neutral on your IC. I am sure everyone would like to know your experiences?

    Sammie,

Thanks for posting this information about statin. Currently I'm on Zetia and I thought I wasn't going to be able to continue it but today I'm having a pretty good day. So I guess I had to give my body time to adjust. My doctor told me he usually prescribes this with a statin but I could not tolerate the Lovistatin.

If my Cholesterol is still high after 6 weeks then I guess we will have to try the other statins and hope I can handle one.

    Thanks again!

      I agree with supplementation

Supplementation must be done in order to feed the gut flora as well. Many people take medication hastily and do not stop to make a plan of action to counter act the antibacterial properties of the statins. Probiotics with statins are a must, an absolute critical part of making sure statins are effective and also harmless. CoQ10 supplementation to replace the depletion and a healthy diet consisting of a doctor correlated nutrition plan. Statins are very effective and great medicine, but you always have to plan ahead. Any good thing will have an effect in your body, you have to find out what those are and work with it through nutrition.

Anyone know if CQ10 is ok for IC patients? Does it cause a flare?
Any particular type that is best for us?

I was on Zocor for years through the Military health system. After being diagnosed with IC I found that the dyes in some medications flared me or caused my Urethra to spaz out...Zocor was the worst of all the medications. I tried Crestor but it had dyes too.Now I'm on Vitorin and it is white, gives me no problems and my Cholesterol Finally got down to good ranges.

I'm having the same result I'm pretty sure. I've been on Crestor for almost two months. So excited to finally have good cholesterol numbers. But I'm having a weird and painful week, that began with a migraine and vomiting Monday night, general nausea on Tuesday, then late Wednesday an unexpected IC flare --no usual triggers present. Calmed my bladder by Thursday when I took an inconclusive UTI test that was sent out for a culture. Continued with mild symptoms until another super painful flare Saturday morning (after a week of bladder comfort food and soothing) . Urine culture was negative. I realized I haven't had such confusing symptoms since I changed meds from Vesicare to Myrabetric, so I stopped the Crestor. Now it's Monday, and I'm hoping and praying my bladder will return to the good place it was before this week. Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one.

Adding a follow-up...I was pain-free four days after stopping the Crestor. Eventually I'll discuss with my doctor but not looking forward to it. For now my goal is to continue without it so at least I can show I haven't had any more unexplainable flares.

It's good that you have apparently identified a trigger --- now I hope you'll be able to find a substitute --- it can be frustrating.
