  • Has anyone heard of this ....

There is a woman in Philadelphia who practices Chinese medicine and has worked very closely with Dr Kristene Whitmore. Dr Whitmore has even done a research study involving Ching-YaoShi's treatment plan for IC. People from all over the country visit her and many are finding great results. She offers a week long on-site treatment plan but also offers an herbal supplement and tea that supposedly greatly reduce symptoms in a large percentage of women. I live about 1 1/2 hours from Philadelphia and would be willing to try this if my symptoms do not improve by this summer (my one year point from when my symptoms appeared). Has anyone heard of this or these products?

I probably shouldn't be answering this but I feel that the saying, "If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is"...Things that offer any type of cure-all for IC, fibro, cfs, etc just really strike me as being opportunistic people seeking to rip off the most vulnerable --- those who are sick and in chronic pain.

I'd research it, research it some more, and research it some more. You might want to check on www.quackwatch.org to see if this is listed. Contact the BBB and see if they've been cited, etc. Also check the ICA's website.

Just be careful. I'm ALL for people trying new things, but if there was an actual cure, or something that so dramatically reduced symptoms we'd have heard about it by now. I really hope it's a good thing.

04/17/09 Crohn's disease almost killed me with a combo of extreme constipation from pain medications. My bowel ruptured, I almost died from peritonitis and spent several days in the ICU then more in a private room on the floor. If you have any questions about severe constipation from pain meds please don't hesitate to send me a message.

This Chinese treatment which I think envolves acupuncture has been around awhile. You might check archives from the ICA site if they are available. I remember reading it and so I did try these herbs for a little while with no effect. I also tried acupuncture. You would think that that would put me off alternative stuff but it hasn't as I am studying herbs now. I realize that if herbs can help they may take a very long time and act slowly. From the Chinese perspective we are out of balance. According to their theories pain is caused by 'stagnant blood' so many formulas are aimed at "blood moving' or moving 'Chi'. There were some studies that showed that some people benefited. Some speculate that acupuncture can help the bladder act better so as to retain less urine. Apparently it can help with infections that way. Unfortunately no one treatment helps everyone. We all have to try different things. PV
I got IC in 1970! I was not diagnosed until 1991. I've tried many drugs and therapies but I tend to only resort to drugs when in a flare because when I am not in a flare (from being good on diet), I suffer only from small bladder volume (like about 7 ozs.) and peeing will relieve the discomfort. When I am feeling relatively normal, I say to myself I am glad I am not on a drug. When I am in a flare, I say, why am I not on a drug! I've recently have been trying to solve my connective issue problems in general. I look to diet and herbs mostly unless it gets really bad. I still think there is great hope for each individual finding a path to healing and there are many.

        thanks

Thank you so much for your responses. I guess I am very open-minded when it comes to holistic medicine. I took a chance and visited the Fibro and Fatigue Center in Philadelphia about two years ago. I was treated with iv and tons of supplements and some traditional meds. I have been weaned from almost everything and I barely even know I have fibro. If I have a flare, I feel achey and tired for 2-3 days and then "poof", it disappears. These centers are based on research done by Dr Jacob Teitelbaum who has healed (not cured ) himself from fibro and CFS. All of the treatment centers are run by real medical doctors who use a combo of conventional and holistic medicine. The IC website is actually what linked me to this info about this IC treatment option. I did do a search on quackwatch (thank you so much for that suggestion, I had never visited that site).... there were no results found. Also, I think that because Dr Kristene Whitmore is working closely with Dr Ching Yao Shi, she must have some credibility. I'm certainly not going to jump into this but it will become an option for me if I do not improve with the traditional medical interventions.
        Thanks again!!!!

I also tried this tea many years ago. It did not help at all.
That does not mean it will not help you. Give it a try but be careful with putting a lot of money out.

Can I ask you a question since you are studing Herbs? Do you know anything about Quercetin? I want to take it but read something about it possibly causing cancer. Since I had a bout with a Carcinoid tumor I am afraid to take it. There are some positives to taking it that really could help me.
