  • Marshmallow Root Tea

I need to know something. I have been TRYING to drink this tea. So many people say it soothes their bladder and I WANT to drink it. But no matter how long I steep it, it still just tastes like hot water!! Did I just get a bad box, or is this what it's supposed to taste like? I've poured out 4 cups because I don't like hot water!! Anybody drink this stuff and actually have it taste like something good?
    Thank you!!!!

Some years ago when I tried it I couldn't stand it --- but I found some in drops that I could put in a cold drink. It didn't do any good so I stopped after a few weeks. I can't drink it at all now because it's a diuretic and I have high blood pressure --- oh, the joys of being a senior citizen????

    Hugs,

Here's the key, when I use it, (I just buy the bags) I seep it along with peppermint tea and sometimes chamomile tea too. Like Donna unfortunately I don't think it helped but I tried it for a good six months. Maybe it will work for you! The peppermint and chamomile are soothing to the gut and bladder as well.

I used to drink it, it doesn't taste great. Kind of like dirt in hot water. Maybe add some honey?
Update! Feeling much better these days and no longer on any meds!

Pelvic pain began July 2008. Urinary frequency began in November of 2008. IC Doctor says I'm one of the worst frequency patients he has had.

Things that helped me the most: IC Diet, Elavil (30mg), Elmiron since June '09 (500mg/day).

Previously tried and quit: one series of six instillations, Neurontin, Ditropan, Oxytrol, electric stimulation to the pelvic floor, Desert Harvest Aloe, Cystoprotek and Flomax, Hydroxyzine (50mg), Alesse Birth control (this helped my period flares when my symptoms used to be bad), PTNS (I think this helped).

I gave up on it. Your right, it does taste like dirt in hot water. Yuck!! BUT I had ordered some tea from the ICN shop, Roastaroma. And of course, I had forgotten where I'd put it. So I went on a hunt yesterday and found it. And, WOW, it's really good!! It tastes like real tea!! It's strong and dark and I put cream in it and it was delish!! I went nuts and had 2 cups with no bladder side effects that I could feel!! I have a new hot drink which is wonderful!! Whenever that coffee urge hits me (which it does a lot) I can have a cup of that and I'll be happy!! That was the best news I've had in a long time!!
BTW, the marshmallow root is in the garbage.

Marshmallow root tea, if you get the real stuff, doesn't taste like much, but with a touch of honey and cream is very soothing. It really does help Bob. He loves it, just having the warmth in the belly soothes. It's like an interior heating pad. We get it bulk, put it a coffee maker and brew it that way. The bags are worthless. And yes, it is a little earthy, but it is a root after all. If you Google it, you will see its many healing properties. IC is one on the list, along with stomach ulcers, blah, blah. It is supposed to "coat" organs (who knows) and you are not supposed to take it with meds within 2 hours or so, or the meds won't absorb, so it must do something. Anywho, it helps Bob and if it helps anyone else, :woohoo: But please do Google it and see, it has coating properties much like other medications. Wish you well, please read about it before you take it with your meds. Jill, wife of Bob

                steeping mrt

I work very closely with an herbalist/physicians assistant, I've been with him long before my IC diagnosis, he had me on marshmallow root tea and it was totally different process to steep. He said it had to be cold steeped in the fridge for at least 24 hours. It gets real slimey, the slime is good it is what coats the linings. It does taste earthy(just sounds better than dirt)
I didn't do it for long, working on an attitude adjustment right now. But I do know someone who tried it and felt like it really helped them.

                  Ok

I'm not digging it out of the compactor (I think someones half finished chicken burrito is on top of it, yuck). But, if the opportunity presents itself again, I will try it. I've been convinced. But not enough to order it just yet!!

                    marshmellow root tea

I buy mine in bulk along with comfrey, rasberry and catnip...I brew it in my coffee pot.....I then put it in the fridge for a day and heat it.
Other than that i brew, comfey, rasberrry and catnip in the pot and drink it all day. It really sooths my badder and helps with bladder spasms..

A little honey and cream do help, we brew ours like coffee and use the loose stuff, not the bags. Might want to think of throwing in a cinnamon stick or vanilla bean. I don't know why yours tasted like dirt. Ours is actually pretty tasty. Could just be what you are getting or an acquired taste. It does help Bob, he loves it. And he's a guy! How many men admit to drinking herbal tea? Jill, wife of Bob

OK so if you think Marshmallow tastes awful one of the really good teas for urethra calming is licourice tea - OMG - that is disgusting. Actaully glad I stumbled on this, I was just dunking it in hot water and drinking it like that, did not know about cold steeping and the fridge etc. Will have to try that.
Every time things start getting tough, I just put on my Big Girl Pants and get on with it

If you like marshmallow I have a lot of old posts on growing, drying and using it. My stuff is much more slimy than the tea from the store. I mix it with agave syrup. I doubt the slime makes it to the bladder. I think the long chains of molecules are digested. I drink it when in a flare. Just OK.
I got IC in 1970! I was not diagnosed until 1991. I've tried many drugs and therapies but I tend to only resort to drugs when in a flare because when I am not in a flare (from being good on diet), I suffer only from small bladder volume (like about 7 ozs.) and peeing will relieve the discomfort. When I am feeling relatively normal, I say to myself I am glad I am not on a drug. When I am in a flare, I say, why am I not on a drug! I've recently have been trying to solve my connective issue problems in general. I look to diet and herbs mostly unless it gets really bad. I still think there is great hope for each individual finding a path to healing and there are many.

                            Thank you

purpleviolet, this is very good information. i have been diagnosed since 2001...first they put me on elmiron...it was ok..the only problem was I had to take it on an empty stomach...so I lost tons of weight....then I lost that insurance and I started getting treated thru the VA (but a private uro) they only would pay for DMSO....DMSO worked. I also drank tons of water and watched what i ate...used prelief and then I was in remission...oh also taking 5/525 hydrocodone....I was in remsiion for about 3 and half years...then this year I had 3 operations and lots of dental work done..AND I stopped watching what I ate, and was not drinking enough water, I gained about 20 pounds...and was eating poorly. I have been in a flare since September!!! I read the book out of the tears and on the path to recovery....I started taking the tea and looking into colostrum....I did well was eating bettet and then STRESS in December happened....good stress but still stress....we bought a home and my 37 year old daughter came home to live with us after serving a year in jail...I tried the vistrial....it worked for a while then didnt....now I went on elavil....it is helping the pain...I am trying to work out, drink the tea, take aloe vera, colostrum and various other supplements. I feel that my bladder wall is damaged and i need to help it heal some how. I am also trying to get the acid out of my body, bu eating akalizing forming foods and taking and alkalizing supplement. I think and this is just me....the acid in my body is keeping my bladder sick, and so I need to get rid of that and then take in healing remedies. like coq10 and vit E.....etc......

I had a stressful morning and my bladder yelled at me lol so i took a hot bath will make some valerian rood tea...perhaps with marshmellow and catnip YUM lol....

Any way the elavil is helping the pain were i can eat some of the foods that i need to eat to heal and get the acid out....

Is this making any sense lol

                              Marshmellow root

I have been putting 3 tea bags in to a pitcher of boiling water, letting it cool and then putting it in the fridge. Drinking it morning and night. The mucous is pretty slimey, and it doesnt taste like much (kind a dirtish taste) but I am hoping it will help, (it can only help)

Anyone else do this and have success?
                              28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!
