  • Gluclosamine/MSM

Hey everyone, I was just wondering who has had success with this suppliment??? I was gonna go buy it today, but just wanted an overview of what everyone though or how it helped I know some people say that it can ONLY be gluclosamine with MSM and nothing else in it especially citric acid...

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

I took it today for the first time. It didnt upset my stomach and actually I didnt think it affected me at all until i got home............I looked at the ingerdients when I got home and I had missed the fact that it has 93 mgs of potassium. Pretty mad at myself right now, cuz yeah Im feeling worse than I did this morning... Must be the potassium I suppose. I have MSM just by itself and I think that it is fine, It was just the gluclosamine that was the prob. id really like to find one without any other ingredients in it and just the gluclosamine. I dont know....Ill have to look tommorow. What an idiot I feel like! There goes 25 bucks that I didnt have

Anyone know of a brand that is jut pure gluclosamine and msm or just gluclosamine sulfate?

        Wondering...

        What does the Glu/MSM do?

I hope that you're still feeling better, and CONGRATS on your graduation!

What are your plans from here on out?

Hey!! Thank you so much! It was a pretty awesome day.

I bought the gluclosamine/MSM b/c some people have had a really good benifit from it! It is one of the same ingerdients as cystoprotek. Im not sure I am one of those though... Im not sure if it was the culprit today, but I actually had a bit of achey pain in my bladder area...Could have been the fact that I am ovulating, but im not quite sure. Guess ill go back to just the elmiron for now and stick with it a little more religiously than I have been.... Not sure my body likes me experimenting with it... lol

I currently take 1/2 a tablet of 1500 mg MSM and glucosamine sulfate, and I feel it it helps me. I still follow the IC diet and if I forget a pill for one day I start getting twinges. I began taking the tablets, albeit initially at a higher dosage, while I was doing expensive instills and following the diet but was still in significant pain. I was tired of taking pain pills and wanted to give it a try, as I had read on the ICNetwork forums of patients having success with it. Donna chimed in on this topic emphasizing the importance of discussing it with your doctor and not taking too high of a dose due to possible side effects. My doctor didn't have much knowledge of using it for IC, and didn't have anything to say about it, except to keep taking it if it helps. I do think it might have made my skin break out more, although that could also be due to the IC diet (I used to eat loads of citrus) and perhaps age/hormones. It is very important to always take the tablet with food otherwise you will get an upset stomach. When mentioned on the forums, several times people reported that stopping taking the tablet led to them having a flare lasting for months, even though they began taking the tablet immediately again. (This happened when they went out of town, for example, and forgot the pills.)

According to Moldwin's book, glucosamine is thought to coat the bladder surface. Typically arthritis patients take it and no studies have been done regarding dosage or effectiveness in IC patients. MSM isn't mentioned in the book but is supposed to be an anti-inflammatory.

            Good luck!
            Symptoms began: January 2010
            Diagnosed with IC: May 2010

Began with burning during/after urination, frequency, urgency, urethral spasms. Recurrent UTIs since 2002. Pelvic pain.

            Current Rx:
Glucosamine/MSM tablets daily (1/2 a 1500 mg tablet Kirkland brand)
            IC diet
            stretches/relaxation/sitzbaths/heating pad

            Used in the Past:
Gepan Instills (Chondroitin sulfate) 1x/mo until Sept 2010
            Loratidine (Antihistamine)
Tilidin (opiate analgetic not commonly prescribed in U.S.) as needed
Cystoscopy w/Hydrodistention: May 2010 (found this temporarily relieved my spasms and urgency)

              Blueberry72,

How often and at what dose do you take the Loratidine?

I tried taking it for a week and it gave me a bloody nose and very bad sore throat.
