I had a sinus infection a few months back and was put on the Zpak and told to take 12 hour Clariton-D as well. First time Ive ever taken either, and the first time Ive been on antibiotics since 2007! It worked well w/ no side effects to the IC issues, however I did get serious hemorrhoid problems. I dunno if it was pregnancy related, but I ended up having to go to the ER I was bleeding worse than a period. I was afraid Id have to get cut or something, they said there was like 7 or 8 rhoids internally (sorry TMI I know). I blame that on the Clariton-D though, the only reason I think it may have been that is cuz my hubby took some (his first time ever trying it) and he ended up w/ almost 2 months of them as well, he actually had to get rx suppositories and still found no relief. So I dunno, maybe it was just pregnancy empathy but it was kinda ironic. Anyway---my IC was fine when on the 7 day Zpak and it worked great I had the sinus infection for 11 days before actually getting a rx, I usually resort to herbs first but there wasnt a whole lot of options while pregnant and it was only getting worse.

        I was on...
Loestrin 24(to prevent period induced flares)
Elmiron since Feb.'07 for a year and half
Atenolol for Migraines(caused by elmiron) since June '07(Had to have the amount doubled)
        Tried Prevacid didn't work.
Tried Axert for migraines didn't work.
Tried Frova for migraines made worse.
        Atarax Feb.'07-Feb'08
Used to take IBS meds of all kinds, now I use Yerba Mate guayaki drinks, eating lots of fiber and flax seed, and taking probiotics and added magnesium. My probiotics help w/ flares too.

Now for the occasional flare related to stress, I take probiotic eleven and marshmallow root and it will make it stop and Im fine again. Otherwise I dont have many problems w/ my severe IC like I used to.Thank God!

My advice, dont take doxycycline if you can help it! I tmight be different for everyone (and clearly do what your doc says) but it just gave me the WORST flare EVER.
            28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

            Me in my graduation gown!

I took Cipro and I am fine. totally unrelated, but an important message. My son was given minocycline for severe acne. No one ever mentioned this to us and it was no where in the literature, which i read extensively, but it caused a condition in my son called Pappilladema. This is a backup of spinal and brain fluid at the base of the brain. He had severe migraines and I finally took him to a neurologist who looked in his eyes (it also causes of swelling of the inner eye area, from the excess pressure) He had to endure an MRI a spinal tap and a month on a percription diuretic. Not only that, but since this happened when he was 13, at the beginning of puberty, the backup of fluid caused him to stop growing since the growth hormones were unable to get through, so he is now 5'6" at 17 and done growing. This may seem a small price to pay, but my son is an excellent Lacrosse player who was hearing from Division 1 school for a scholarship in the 10th grade, however, many of the coaches have now told us that due to high lack of height (you can only be so strong at 5'6", some one who is 6 ft tall is going to be stronger than you) we are now looking at division 3 schools. My sons dream of playing lacrosse at a Division 1 school has been dashed because of this and he is heartbroken. Not one single doctor warned us of this, only the neurologist told us it is a side effect, though somewhat rare. We were disgusted by the whole thing. Please excercise caution no matter what you are putting your children on.
