This is to wash away excess bacteria in your urethra. Three hours later (yes, second pee)you will collect a clean catch (follow instructions, in fact where surgical gloves so as not to contaminate sample) make sure you sit on the toilet backwards.
As for packing I bought a medium size Tupperware with a lid, put the sterile urine cup in the middle of the Tupperware and surrounded it with dry ice. I then bought a packaging box from Walmart (however you can use UPS/FED EX packaging)and placed the Tupperware inside the packaging box and filled it with packaging foam/bubble so it will be secure. I overnighted my box via UPS. So, make the box/package size work for you. You can cut the ice. But whatever you do, DO NOT touch the dry ice, it will burn your skin. I know you have anxiety, so did I and I still do. I'm on my third day on antibiotics. I will keep you posted on the outcome. Also, now that I know I have a bacteria, I have an appointment with an infectious disease specialist so that he can monitor my progress and determine the length of time I need to continue antibiotic therapy and if need be use more aggressive measures such as antibiotic infusion. I just want to stop suffering. If you have anymore questions, email me at [email protected] and I will email you my number. Sometimes talking through details makes for much better clarity.
Hope this works for you☺️ Also I believe it is very much worth it because if nothing else at least it can rule out infection and relieve the wondering should it come back negative.
I forgot to add, make sure your dry ice is packaged in plastic such as ziplock.

I don't think most insurances will cover this test.

I think you're right, Donna. I haven't checked to see if mine will or not but regardless, I feel like I need to do it anyway, even out of pocket. I have the constant feeling of having to pee, just like with an infection, but nothing ever shows up in cultures. And I don't mean a "twinge" here and there. I mean a never-ending, intense sensation that I have to pee, even immediately after using the restroom. I saw you post in another thread that most IC-ers, with treatment, feel good most of the time. I have not had one day since this started where I've felt good. Not one. And that's after Elmiron, Elavil, Hyophen, bladder instills, lidocaine, hydroxyzine, Aloe Vera, Cystoprotek, PTNS, acupuncture and any other recommended treatment for IC. That's why I don't think I actually have IC anymore. I did at first and that's why I gave those medications time to work. I was on Elmiron for a year and a half and Vesicare and other various OAB meds for 2 years. Still, nothing helped at all. The only thing that has brought a little relief is PT and I think that's just because everything is in protective mode due to whatever is going on so stretching helps calm it down one or two notches. But it's still ALWAYS there.

This all started with one bad E. Coli infection. I know that bacteria is gone but I have always felt like something else stayed behind and has kept me in this agony for four long years. If nothing shows up, at the very least it will put my mind at ease that I've checked that box off, too. And if it does come back positive for some other bacteria, it's more than worth a try to me to see if antibiotic therapy helps. I won't, however, just take antibiotics without a confirmed infection. And as Healed said, with the help of my other doctors, maybe I can find even a little relief.

Healed, THANK YOU!!!!! This was exactly the information I was hoping to get and the tupperware idea is brilliant. I will most definitely be emailing you. As you said, sometimes some great clarity can come from talking and this is something that I'm very interested in exploring. I really appreciate your help.

Healed: I am also thinking about sending my urine in to United Medical. I have been suffering a long time with IC ( since 2005, dx in 2006). I am fairly certain my IC is an undiagnosed sub-clinical infection, I think a lot of ICers actually have an undiagnosed bacterial infection.

I hope you have a good open minded Infectious disease doctor. Most of them will not even accept the urine broth culture results. You may have to look until you find one who is open minded. I saw an infectious disease doctor 8 years ago about chronic Lyme disease and he told me there was no such thing!!!! I even mentioned about my IC being caused by a bacteria and mentioned United Medical labs and how they offer a broth culture to look deeper into infection. He flat out said any urine that is going through the mail has the high potential to be defective. I disagree with that however. I think if you pack the sample correctly it should be just fine. I have new ID doctor and he seems really nice and open minded.

Anyhow, please keep us updated on how you do with the antibiotics..
