I read on this site about anaerobic bacteria that are not tested in urine cultures but may be causing IC. Has anyone tried metronidazole the antibiotic to kill these bacteria?

Do you remember which anaerobic bacteria were mentioned? As far as I know metronidazole (Flagyl) is not used for UTI bacteria and I haven't heard of anyone using it for bladder bacteria. You may have read that Enterococcus and Staph are sometimes present in the urine but are not found by the typical lab culture. They do show up in a broth culture which is more extensive and able to isolate more species. A sensitivity test should be done to determine which antibiotics the bacteria are sensitive to. I have never seen metronidazole listed on a culture sensitivity report for UTI bugs.
You really should not take any antibiotic without knowing what species of bacteria you are treating.

I took flagyl with Ic but it was for vaginosis. Let me tell you that drug is a nightmare. i am still sick in my gut from it. It is horrible.not yet dx with ic-diagnosing myself as of aug 2006

My only experience with metronidazole was when I had it during bladder instills. My bladder was fantastic for 2 days then went back to being awful again. I think this drug is used a lot in Lyme disease treatment but I've never actually heard of it being used for a UTI.
You know Katrina has a lot of experience with metronidazole maybe you could ask her about it? I am curious too to know what your doc is using this for. I hope it helps you.
