  • Center for researching women's infections

I just found out the Dr. Scott Hultgren of Washington University has been named director of a new center to study infections that affect women predominantly. He has done the most research on UTIs and his lab discovered the "pods" or biofilms formed by E.coli in mouse bladders that they believe explain recurrent UTIs.

The School of Medicine is launching a new effort to study infectious diseases that preferentially affect women. The center for Women's Infectious Disease Research (cWIDR) will focus on issues such as microorganisms that cause urinary tract infections, infections that lead to premature delivery and microorganisms that may contribute to life-threatening conditions such as cancer and heart disease.

Let's hope this leads to some new findings. Maybe they will discover IC is really an infection as some of us believe.
