Hi everyone... So I have been researching Ureaplasma. I have NO idea whether or not I have it, but I have never been placed on antibiotics for my urinary symptoms. I started on doxycycline today to see I guess if it helps.. I HATE antibiotics and I am pretty convinced that they got me here in the first place, but I can never be sure... Im so scared, and I just want a quick fix like everyone else... Has anyone actually had luck with this?I have read sooo much and they say that ureplasma can mimic IC symptoms... I alway have this discharge which is a symptom, and makes me believe that there is something else going on down there. No std no infection nothing.. apperantly this is a bacteria that is not normally detected without a special test? I just feel like I have to try everything because I might be missing something!?

    Any advice?

    28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

The discharge sounds odd. Your doctor must think so too to try you on Doxycyclin.

I tried a round of Doxycyclin in the beginning before being officially diagnosed with IC because I also had read about Chlamydia and Ureaplasma causing cystitis symptoms and often being very difficult to test for. I didn't have any discharge. Unfortunately it didn't work for me.
    Symptoms began: January 2010
    Diagnosed with IC: May 2010

Began with burning during/after urination, frequency, urgency, urethral spasms. Recurrent UTIs since 2002. Pelvic pain.

    Current Rx:
Glucosamine/MSM tablets daily (1/2 a 1500 mg tablet Kirkland brand)
    IC diet
    stretches/relaxation/sitzbaths/heating pad

    Used in the Past:
Gepan Instills (Chondroitin sulfate) 1x/mo until Sept 2010
    Loratidine (Antihistamine)
Tilidin (opiate analgetic not commonly prescribed in U.S.) as needed
Cystoscopy w/Hydrodistention: May 2010 (found this temporarily relieved my spasms and urgency)
    Reside in Germany

I was diagnosed back in April with IC through a Positive PST test at my gyno. I then went in May to a uro who did a cystoscopy and she told me then that my Ureathra was red and inflamed but that she was not going to do anything about it. This has been my only complaint throughout my 4 months of having this is that my urethra burned and it just does not feel normal down there. I was going to the bathroom every hour and on my worst day every 20 minutes. Before going to the uro my gyno pit me on Hydroxyzine and that seemed to be helping. About 3 weeks after going to the uro I went back to my family doctor because things just did not feel right! I told him about the uro saying my urethra was red and inflamed and so he put me on doxycycline. He did another urine culture and it came back positive for ureaplasma. I was so happy to finally figure out why things just didn't feel right! About halfway through the antibiotic I had 2 days where I actually felt completely normal! Then the burning came back and it has stuck around ever since. I have been off the antibiotic for a week now and I am going to go back and see if there is any chance the infection is still there since nothing really feels better. I hope that if it is ureaplasma for you it can get taken care if and all your symptoms will go away! Good luck!

I was on the antibiotic for 2 weeks. On about day 8 is when I was starting to feel like things were all ok. I have been off the antibiotic and although I no longer have the frequency I still have the burning and urgency. I know nothing about ureaplasma. I felt like my doctors were on there last ropes with me because I keep going back and they couldn't find anything wrong. It's sad but I was happy to learn that I did actually have an infection! I'm hoping my symptoms are from still having the infection and that I truly don't have IC. I have been following the diet for the past 2 months but I really miss all the food I can't have!

No, I never felt worse. My only symptoms through all of this was frequency, urgency and pain and burning in the ureathra. When I had my PST test I never had pain or burning in the bladder just in my urethra. I am extremely skeptical that I have IC. In what way are you feeling worse?

Gah. It feels like my urethra is swollen shut. like I have been kicked in the crotch. It takes exsessive straining for me to get ANY pee out and my whole abdomen feels raw. That cant be good.

I definitely did not have that. Maybe it is the medication? I would call your doctor. How are they testing you for the ureaplasma? Mine was through a urine culture and I had the results in just a few days.

Hi, I have just been to London (I live in the uk) to see a really good doctor who has sent a urine and vaginal swab for ureaplasma. He says that around 50% of women with painful bladders who come to see him have ureaplasma and can be made better with doxycycline- a strong dose. He also says don't expect to instantly feel better as your bladder needs to heal, but you should be re-tested after a month to check the ureaplasma have all gone. His name is Dr Fred Lim from The London Clinic. I suggest you Google him and read what he says. Don't be scared of the antibiotics. They may make you feel pretty unwell but will do you no long-term harm and are well worth it if they cure you.

Hi, this is to add to my last reply: Not sure where in America test for ureaplasma but http://www.thesticlinic.com/ureaplasma-urealyticum does it in England. Because it is a DNA test it doesn't matter if the sample is stored in the post as they can look at dead ureaplasma, so perhaps you could even get it posted over here!?

HEY Thanks for the info I did have a ureaplasma test dine here in Canada, and they ahve en it away. Problem is that the antibiotics HURT MY BLADDER like screaming in agony discomfort and frequency. I was on the for 2 days and already I was where I couldnt get out of bed. Im not sure what they are gonna do if I DO have this infection as the meds were only precationary... I have no idea, but I feel better without them! Which sucks because I wanted it to work.
