• Questions!!

I've read on the previous posts about BCG but I'm still confused. Is it used for a diagnosis or a treatment for various illnesses?

My reason for this is I have IC. And I have a 10mth old niece who has had a "bladder infection" for a week now. She's getting antibiotic shots everyday plus baby tylenol for her high temps. The doctors are not sure what is causing this. They've done various caths and bloodwork. She has to go to Children's Hospital on the 21st for a renal ultrasound and BCG test. I told my sister-in-law to talk to the doctors about me having IC. So far they haven't gave them any idea on any diagnosis'. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jaime

Hi Jaime, I considered doing BCG a while back. For ICers it is a form of treatment. It is a weakend (?) strain of tuberculosis and is done as an instill into the bladder (just like DMSO). Normally uros do this form of treatment for bladder cancer but has been used successfully to treat IC too. I did not go thru with it. I instead, chose to go with RIMSO first and consider BCG at a later date.

I'm not sure what a BCG test is in terms of your niece. My thoughts were maybe the letters stand for something else. It seems the medical community loves acronyms.

I know that IC stands something else other than Interstitial Cystitis.

Hmmm, I don't know if I really helped all that much...

I am currently in a BCG treatment study at University of Maryland - BCG is used as a treatment not a diagnosis

A BCG test is a test to determine whether or not you have, or have had, tuberculosis.

Donna, is that different than a Mantoux test?
That's what I usually had done when I got hired to work in a Medical Facility some years ago.

Thanks!

BCG is the abbreviation for bacillus Calmette-Guerin. The usual test for this is the skin test, but there may be a different one for small children.

I tried a series of instillations with the BCG a couple of years back and unfortunately they did not help the pain at all. In fact for a few months following the instillations my pain was a lot worse. I am not sure how many others have tried BCG and have found that instead of helping they made things worse. I have a little increase in frequency but my main sympton - PAIN- has remained the same no matter what I do.

I had scheduled an appt with Dr. Payne at Stanford. I spoke to two Uros and neither of them seemed impressed with the treatment. I cancelled the apt. Good luck to those who decide to give it a try.
