• Dexedrine/Dextroamphetamine help please!!!!!!

Ok everyone..I have seen lots of posts about dexedrine/dextroamphetamine and the treatment of IC. Most of the posts and studies I have found are from a few years ago. I would really like to try this treatment since most everything I have seen has been positive. If it is truly working for some I would love to hear about it and how it has changed your life. I know I have seen where some have even went into remission and been able to have sex on this medication. I would like to know which doctor prescribes it for you and if you have truly been able to get off of the pain meds or drop them down to the minimum of maybe a lortab or something once in a while. I really hope that I can find someone to prescribe this for me and am looking for testimonials to compile and take to my doctors. I would love to get some feedback and bring it up to my uro since I have not got the results from my last hydro, but he was able to see the IC on a cysto he did in the office which is something that no Uro before has been able to do. I think this medication would help me in numerous ways as along with the IC. I of course have tried Elmiron for 6 months with instills and the pills with no help from it and if I can get off or down to the minimum on pain meds I would be so so HAPPY!!!!! I also suffer from PFD, IBS, migranes, fibro among other things and have thought for a long time that I have adult ADD/ADHD which would make since because I know it is hereditary and both of my children have it (ADHD). Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!!!! Love to all and I hope everyone is having a good low pain/pain free day! HUGS to all!!!

I have been on dextro for 2 months now. I take the tablet form not the capsule. I have been with the same uro surgeon for 5 years and have tried so many treatments. Finally I just asked him if we could try this and told him about the Hubbard clinic in Kentucky that was using this med. So he was willing to try it. The only down fall is that you can not have refills on this med. Its one that you have to pick up every month. I still have some bad days. Just depends... still believe that sex contributes to an attack and some foods. I also take 10 mg hydros but not as many and I have to take ativan which is a benzo for sleep. but all in all doing much better than I was. Hope this info helps. I have a good relationship with my uro and my pain management doc. I am also starting bio feedback tomorrow.

totally agree YAY it's spacing again---w/what Tracy has to say. It doesn't, like every other IC treatment, work for everyone. If you are going to try it, DON'T take the capsule form aka Aderall. Aderall- not sure of the spelling- has additional salts to make it long lasting. IMHO, those salts are what can cause someone to flare when taking Adderall instead of Dextroamphetamine sulfate tablets. It is a drag to have to refill every month; thanks to those who have abused it. Not being judgmental-- some folks just have a propensity for addiction; others of us are not so unfortunate.

Thank you to everyone for your input. I know that different treatments work for different people. The uro I am seeing now wants me to go back on Elmiron which I took in pill form and instills for at least 6 months and it did not help with anything. I am hoping and praying that he will be open to try this medication if not I will try to find a psych doc to prescribe it. I deff think it is worth a shot and hopefully a step in the right direction to getting my life back.

I hope he listens to you. Some doc's are not comfortable with this drug as it is also not an fda approved med for IC. But for me , my uro has been my primary for 5-6 years and know's all that I have tried. I am the only one he is prescribing this med for at this time. i have been a guinnea pig for this disease and try everything and he know's this. I also have a severe case of IC. This drug has not been a cure all for me, but I do believe it has great benefits. I do have a few more good day's and can actually get some housework and other things done. I may only have a few hours a day to do these things when I had none before. I think my problem is I try to do much when I feel good. So if prescribed this med do not over assert yourself

My doctor put me on dextroamhetamine SR (capsules) 10 mg bid about 6 weeks ago. Initially he had me take 10 mg q am for 2 weeks to see if I would have any negative side effects and so that he could check my blood pressure and do and EKG. In the first 2 weeks my pain did decrease. As of now about 95 % of my pain is gone (YEAH!). I hope this continues as it is quite nice. The remaining pain that I have is brief and is more discomfort than pain (on a scale of 1-10 it is more like a 1 or 2 instead of a 7). I also take 400 mg Elmiron and 25 mg of Benadryl for IC. Hope this helps.

Dex helpful for me too

Glad the SR capsules didn't bother you. They do a lot of people. I think there are extra salts in Adderall, if that is in fact what you're taking, that aren't in Dextroamphetamine sulfate tablets. The tablets are very inexpensive; jic that is an issue for any of you. J

Cindi,
If you do a search you will find a ton of posts on this subject. A few years ago there was a big debate on here about whether or not this drug would help IC patients. A lot of IC Dr's will not prescribe it so some people saw other Dr's to get it. I don't exactly know why it is believed to work but it is controversial in the treatment circles. You can find all the info when you search past threads.

Well, I take Vyvanse which is basically long lasting dexedrine but can't say that it helps my IC. I'm ADD-PI and w/out it I'm a total wreck.

It is the dexadrine short actting that people have had success with, I don't know why but it helps pain and improves symptoms for some people.

Some people swear by it.
My are with you all. May you all find a way to peace and joy in your lives.

I wanted my GP to prescribe dexedrine because it's a lot cheaper then Vyvanse but he refused, there's some stigma around it - thanks to people who abused it as a diet drug. Oh well...I might do some digging around to find some studies and show it to him. My neuro is a jerk too so I doubt he'd go for it.

@ Runner & everyone

Have been on short acting Dextroamphetamine sulfate X2 years. I'm about 90% better. If I could get PFD completely calmed down, I'd be really happy.

If you can swing it $ wise, try a psychiatrist in your area. I may be mildly ADD. I could not get an Rx for Ds until I found a psychiatrist in my area who wasn't afraid to let me try it. It gets pricey b/c I have to see him every 3 months. BTW, there is a way out of monthly visits/Rx. The doctor simply writes on the Rx "may not fill until _____ date." This prevents patients from refilling the Rx to soon and protects the doctor.
