  • Pyridium: is it ok for flares on a long term basis?

I use pyridium for flares but have heard it is not meant for long term use.
Are there long term complications to using it? It helps my urethral pain/burning. The urelle did not help me. Any other drugs to take away burning pain for short term?

This is something you need to ask your doctor.

Donna is right, you do want to ask your dr. I had read here but pyridium was not good for long term use and I found myself using it almost every day so I asked my dr about taking one of the blue ones because I had read they were safer for longer term use. He said I was right. He did prescribe me Urelle but I know there are other ones that make you pee blue and I think they are all safer for longer term use, check w/ your dr.

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

I agree, discuss this with your Dr.
Having said that, my URO and pharmacist both told me pyridium was safe to use long-term.

Like everyone else said you need to talk to your doctor -- My uro said its safe to use long term, however my primary care told me not to -- use it for 3 days here and then stop for a week and if I need to use it again then go back on it.
