My IC pain has been horrible the past month. I've taken Ambien on and off for the past few months. I have to take it every night now b/c the pain is so bad there is no way I could sleep.

Is there anything else that will help me sleep? Medications that typically cause drowsiness (Vistaril, pain meds) don't really make me tired.

Sometimes low dose antidepressants can help.

I'm finding that Advil nightime is helping a bit...at least with the falling asleep part. I'm still up to pee alot but can fall back to sleep faster most times.

I have been on ambien for about 2 years and it is not very effective at all anymore. My Pain Management Dr. added Zanaflex, a muscle relaxer that makes you sleepy, to take at night with the ambien. For the first time in 3 years, I am getting about 5 hours sleep most nights. While this may not sound like alot of sleep to a person who was literally down to 1.5 hours a night, this is nothing short of amazing. I have been in PT for several months, and most of my issues seem to be pelvic floor at this point. I am fine until I have a bowel movement and then the pain comes. I am taking 2 mg. of valium 3 times a day, but it does very little to help. I am hoping I just need more time. Sleep is crucial to us, so I suggest you add something to your nighttime regime. I stayed away from muscle relaxers for a long time because I hate taking drugs, but at some point most of us have to realize that with a chronic pain disease, drugs may be our only help. Good luck to you.

I take 10mg of Valium at night to sleep and it does the trick every time. I might wake up one time a night to pee.

I've noticed that there are many times my bladder starts hurting within a few minutes of having a bowel movement. Is this a sign of pelvic floor disorder?

I'm waiting on my doctor to send the referral to the PT...she does something called Biofeedback...I don't know a lot about this, but I guess it can show if you have PFD...I also have an appointment with a PFD specialist at Ohio State in July.

Try muscle relaxers. I have been on ambien for years and it really doesn't do much anymore. My PM started me on zanaflex, a muscle relaxer (I also have fibromyalgia, but don't we all!) and I take 8mg at night and am happy to say I sleep for at least 5 hours most nights. The muscle relaxer calms my bladder and makes me drowsy. Try it.
