  • Ultram and Zoloft

Anyone taking these two meds together? I saw my uro today and I asked for something for my pain and I was prescribed Ultram. He knows I am currently taking Zoloft and Desyrel. I looked up contraindications and apparently Zoloft and Ultram do not mix well at all and can cause seizures and serotonin syndrome.

I like my uro and I feel he's very knowledgeable, but the fact that he isn't aware of this danger and also didn't know that tramadol (ultram) is now a controlled substance in Florida kind of concerns me.

I can't blame it all on him though. The nurse practitioner pretty much saw me for the entire visit. The uro only spent a couple minutes with me and may have just not considered this contraindication.

I will ask the pharmacist about the danger tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone out there is taking this combo.

Also got a script for Elmiron and my copay is only $20 so I'm pretty happy about that, but that means nothing if it doesn't work for me. Have to try it and see. I will first make sure the pharmacy will have it on hand for refills. They do have it in stock for this script fortunately, but starting for a month and not being able to refill seems pointless.

I take Elavil and Zoloft. I do have dry mouth since I started talking them both but no other side effects.

Definitely talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking ultram and zoloft together. Are they ordered for different times during the day?

I take one morning and one at night. The doctor and pharmacist say it's fine to take together. Both meds can cause dry mouth but I have taken Elavil for years and not had it. I've been taking them together for about 9 months, I was hoping it would even out. Just have to learn to cope with it.

To clarify --- Frustrated is asking about zoloft and ultram --- not zoloft and elavil.

I realised that but wondered if anyone had experienced dry mouth with the meds I was taking.

              Donna, thank you for clarifying...

I started getting confused myself and then realized people were responding to Elavil and Zoloft combined. That is not a problem in most cases from what I understand.

Ultram and Zoloft could potentially be very dangerous. I am waiting to hear back from my doctor on a possible alternative.

Sorry if I confused everyone but the heading, not topic, included Elavil.

That's ok sedavisoes. Simple misunderstanding. Coincidentally I was also prescribed Elavil yesterday, but left that out of my post. I am primarily concerned with the zoloft/ultram contraindication right now.

I actually found out that Elavil and Desyrel can possibly cause problems so I also need to verify this as well, but not as severe as the zoloft/ultram.

Taking a lot of meds at the same time is always a risk. Even if there is no confirmed contraindication, there's a first time for everything. Everyone's mind and body react differently to chemicals. Which obviously is the reason Elmiron isn't the solution for everyone with IC and also treatments in general vary from person to person.

The goal of research is to hopefully find one medication that can help the majority of sufferers and not just a few here and there.

I don't know about combining an SSRI with Ultram. This could cause a serotonin syndrome which may be life threatening. Definitely check with your pharmacist.

I know that when I was on Paxil and my doc prescribed Ultram for pain, the pharmacist said absolutely don't mix those two together!

Medications I'm on: Vyvanse 70mg, Xanax 1 mg as needed, Wellbutrin XL 150 mg, Vicodin 5/500 as needed for pain, Microgestin 1/20 continuously.

bingo and many MDS and even pharmacists dont know this. you should NOT mix ultram with any SSRI if you do be aware of signs of serotonin syndrome. It happneed to me and I ended up in Urgent Care full blown serotonin syndrome

I eduscate my MDS on this pain MD did not know and Psy MD had no clue.... it was sleep MD who figured it out So watch if you are taking ultram w SSRI . I would not do it but that is my personal choice as Serotonin syndrome even urgent care MD had to go look that up on computer and he was ER MD on duty that night

ultram and elavil fine it is the SSRIs............. see Ultram has SSRI properties to begin with that makes you taking two SSRI at once

My Uro had me on Ultram, Wellbutrin, Elavil and Lexapro...I was on the Wellbutrin and Lexapro before I was diagnosed, but he KNEW I was on them when he gave me the others. I even asked about them when he put me on the others. I went home and looked them up. I got a wee bit nervous I must say. I called the office and never got a call back after 3 calls. They even doubled the Ultram after the 4th call when I told them the Ultram wasn't doing anything for me and by the way the mix was worrying me. I went to my GP and he said that the 4 together was a bad mix not just because Ultram doesn't "Play well in the sandbox with others" but I guess Wellbutrin doesn't interact well with others either. Long story short, neither of my docs EVER told me to come off of anything...I WEENED MYSELF off of 3 of the 4 meds. Since being diagnosed I have started to become more and more responsible for my own care than my doctors. Very few doctors in the Atlanta area are IC "with it" and those that are have waaayyyy too many patients. We have to be on top of things ourselves unfortunately, or we may fall through the cracks. DO NOT take an anti-depressant with Ultram...the risks are pretty high.

If you go to the same pharmacy for all your meds, your pharmacist should have picked this up too they have a record of all your meds and it they interact it should show up on their computer and tell them, I think they should know this anyways.

Next time when waiting for the phone call from you Dr. call your pharamcist, mine will call my Dr. and discuss options for me.
