I am scheduled for a nerve block on monday for help with IC I am getting a little scared due to lack of knowledge of this procedure, and i kinda thought the doctors would have tried other pain therapies first any suggestions

I had an inferior hypogastric nerve block on Tuesday and all it did was cause me to have a more sore back and add to my back pain. I have no idea what med they injected into my lower back. I was told what it was but don't remember. My doctor said if it helped then they would do another nerve block in a few weeks with a much stronger med like mercaine. Anyways, it was very unpleasant and I did not feel any numbness whatsoever in any part of my body. In my opinion it is not worth the risks and did nothing for me. I only did it so I can move closer to having my bladder removed. On top of it my doctor was doing such a block for the first time and he was supervised by a senior anesthesiologist. I felt like a learning subject and I was terrified that something would go wrong. I can't believe that they had a doctor who was totally inexperienced in such a nerve block perform it. I wanted to back out, but knew if I did I would get dismissed again from the pain clinic and would not be considered for surgery, so I allowed to put myself in danger. It's unfortunate, but this is how it is at the pain clinic where I am a patient. If you don't do as you are told you are punished and have your medication cut off or dismissed all together. I would caution anyone considering this procedure to make sure you have an experienced and knowledgeable doctor doing it. You don't want someone tampering with your spinal cord and nerves, because the outcome can be tragic. The risks are minimal but there is about a 3% chance of developing neurological disorders, partial paralysis, or a blood clot. Thank God I got through it fine. What doesn't make any sense to me is why I didn't experience any numbness at all not even in the areas where the med was injected. I can't help but think that they used a placebo and did the nerve block for learning purposes only.
They use a monitor to view where they are entering and try to avoid the spinal chord, bone structure but the monitor only helps somewhat in guiding them. He hit my nerves several times and I felt an electrical, burning pain radiating from by back down my leg to my foot. That was the worst part. I was unable to move so the doctor won't poke or damage any organ, so I yelled ouch ouch! Overall it wasn't so bad but was totally useless. That was my experience.

Back in 1981 I had a S2 nerve Block Done. They went in and cut the Two main nerves that go to the Bladder for Pain. Then I ended up self-cathing every 15 minuities. Since then I now have a Ileo--conduit. I wear a Bag. I still get Kidney infections but over all I had 18 surgeries for the Bladder.

Pain Specialists love nerve blocks. It's their first course of treatment. Around here (New Jersey), anyway.

I had 6 for the IC and 3 at a later time for a Herniated Disc. I did not get much help for the IC but it helped for the Herniated Disc.
