    Deeper Sedation???

    Hey All,
    I loved having the nerve blocks but I am soooooo phobic of pain/needles I kinda freak out while they do it. I do not sedate easily, and while I was given versed it didn't work at all. My doc said he had given me the legal limit (we live in VA) and so here I was wide awake almost having a panic attack the whole time. While I would love to have more nerve blocks as they were quite effective I would like to have them while MUCH more comfortable. Anyone have a better experience re sedation??? Or suggestions? Thanks!

    Does your doctor have any ideas that might help? I don't know if they can give pre procedure meds to help you relax --- I suggest you ask your doctor.

      Wow, I'm envious of the fact that you were given sedation during your blocks! I had one a few months ago and I wasn't given anything at all, which just seemed incredible cruel and unfair as it really was hands down the most painful thing I've ever felt, even including the bladder pain. I was screaming so much, the nurses had to hold my legs down and at one point they were about to stop because it was hurting me too much. It didn't help, anyway.
      Seven years of hell ongoing, chronic bladder and urethral pain with an umbrella diagnosis of 'chronic pelvic pain syndrome'

      Procedures done:

      3 x Cystoscopies (1 with biopsy)/1 x Kidney Ultrasound/1 x Laparoscopy (found old endometriosis)/1 x Pelvic MRI/12 Cystistat Instillations/1 x Nerve Block in my spine (no anaesthesia)/Acupuncture

      Drugs I've had:

      Nabilone/Tramadol/Dosulepin/Amitryptaline/Oramorph/Gabapentin/Pregabalin/Ketamine/Duloxetine/Buprenorphine

      Due to have Sacral Nerve Neuromodulation Therapy in April 2012 (Insterstim Therapy I believe it's called)

      Currently taking:

      600mg Pregabalin, 120mg Duloxetine, 30mcg/hour Buprenorphine through transdermal patches, Laxatives every night and a nightly Trimethoprim antibiotic.

        sedation

        my doc just started with the nerve blocks, he is at my pain clinic he is either an anthesilogist or pain doc I'm not sure. He gives me Propofol IV which I also had when I dislocated my ankle and they had to relocate in an ER before my leg surgery. Anyway, it works really well for me. He has himself doing the spianl blocks and another anethesiologist doing the sedation.
        IC found on hydro 2/2004, total hysterectomy, rectocele and vaginal wall reconstruction 2/2004.
        I have had previous Heparin instills that worked great.
        8/2007 Pain, urgen/freq returned.
        Since then I have had weeks and weeks of instills,
        PFD diagnosed 02/2008 finally


        IC
        PFD
        IBS
        Anxiety

        MEDS:
        Fentanyl patch, Hydroxyzine, Klonopin, Tizandine, Climara patch

          paradiselost - I am so sorry that you had that experience! I am shocked that a doctor would give a nerve block in the spinal area without versaid or some other knock out medication. That is indeed very cruel.

          Have you talked to your doctor about this to see if next time he can provide you with something to prevent the pain and anxiety? If the doctor refuses, I personally would be finding a new doctor that is more compassionate and gentle with me.

          Additional Pain Management:
          Gangliar Impar Nerve Blocks (approx every 2-3 mths) - currently discontinued due to finances

            Cheers Ragnars... it did seem really weird that any person would be expected to handle it like I did. I don't have any more planned thankfully as it didn't work, and I'm in England so we can't really pick and choose doctors, we just get what we're given. Funnily enough the consultant is a great guy, really friendly and helpful and intelligent, I love the experience of seeing him compared to some really awful other health people I've seen. I was tempted to knock back something myself at home first worried about anaesthesia but my bf said it was a stupid idea as when i get to hospital and ask about some painkillers they may agree to it but be unable to give you anything due to what you've already taken. So I took nothing got there, asked, was refused, and went through with it!

              I was just reading your post. If you are getting UTI's every two to three weeks, it is likely the same UTI that is not going away. You need to be on an antibitoic for at least a month straight to kill it. If you take an antibitoic for to short a time, the bacteria will become resistant to it, which is what is happening. I was told by a doc that UTI's need to to be treated for much longer than 7 to 10 days. Especailly complicated ones like yours that keep coming back. Hope you feel better soon.

                Thanks! What you say makes perfect sense, I didn't really think of it that way. I always thought it was weird to only give three days of antibiotics for an infection, I felt there was no way that would make it go away but the doctors always say it's to give just enough of the drug to make it go away but not so much you get chance to build up tolerance.

                After my current sample comes back and I get the results from the last infection, the doctor said he would put me on a long term antibiotic. Just need to decide which one.
