  • How does it Work?

My doc has suggested this. I have read about the procedure.
I want to know how it works? Does it over stimulate the nerves associated with the bladder and pelvic area? it seems like it would increase the pain????

Does anyone know exactly how this works? I have medical background so i can understand the lingo;-)

    thx

A small acupuncture type needle is placed in the posterior tibial nerve and then a tens unit is hooked up to it. The posterior tibial nerve is derived from the same nerves in the Lumbar Sacral area which innervate the bladder.

The thought is that it can help re set the nerves, break the unusual "wind up" that they are experiencing. It has better success with OAB sx than pain. I did it for pain but it did not help with pain. Frequency has not really been a problem for me. If you insurance covers it it is worth a try,

I wish I could find someone in my area that did the acupuncture. I don't have a lot of pain but i normally have a lot of frequency. Would be great, but I live in an area where I'm sure nobody would know anything about this. Is there different acupuncture drs (ones that are specialist in this area). Just curious cause I thought I might google it and see if I could find one somewhat close.

currently taking Klonipin 1mg as needed for nerves and stress
currently taking Ditropan XL 10mg (Oxbutynin ER) once a day for ugency and frequency.

trying Aloe Vera Juice just a little mixed with water

I am on my 3rd uro. The 1st I went to cause of an UTI it was clear in the culture by the next month, but I was still having issues so he continued me on macordantin (sp.) and urised for about a year and I just seemed to get worse. My 2nd uro said he thought I had an OAB and tried me on meds for that. Everytime I went to him he would dialate my uretha and he also did a hydro (streched my bladder) and supposely removed scar tissue from my bladder and urethea and said my bladder was inflammed. But he said I didn't have enought pain to have IC. I tried many OAB meds and nothing seems to help I was in the bathroom atleast once an hour if not more. I suffered for a while. Now I am on my 3rd uro. The 1st visit we talked and he instantly said I had IC. He checked me and did an ultrasound of my bladder and order a cat scan and put me on Elmiron. I am currently waiting for the results of the cat scan.

A little about me that doesn't have to do with this is I am a stay at home mother of two kids and I have a very loving and supportive husband.

You may want to also check with some uros on the PTNS. My uro does this therapy in his office. I have also been considering it after I read Jill's bio here about her IC history. For her it also worked on breaking the pain cycle, but others have said it only worked for their frequency.

I had an appt today with my uro and I asked if he recommended it or not and he said no. Idk tho I may try it anyways if I can find one thats not too far. It can't hurt anything I don't think.

            Melissa,
That is what I thought about trying PTNS. It didn't cause harm and could have possibly helped. It was just time for me since I don't have a co-pay. Unfortunately it did not help me.

Suzanne, I'm sorry to hear that it didn't help you. I don't know if I will do it or not. The closest one I found is over 4 hours away so I just don't know. I think I am going to wait and see how the meds I'm on work out first.

                Pins

I had never heard of this. I asked my urologist if there was anyone who did acupuncture for IC in my health plan (Kaiser), and she found a family physician who does PINS. I have had two treatments, so I don't know how it will work. It takes about 6 to know....there are 12 in all. She said it helped 70% of patients.
