  • Received a Safety Alert from Medtronic

Received a safety alert today from Medtronic. The jist of it stated that if you have the neurostimulator device (InterStim to us) implanted you should not receive Diathermy Therapy.

I imagine that those of you with the permanent implant have already received the same letter or will receive it within the next few days after the holiday. I wanted to give you all a heads up.

I had never heard of it before the letter came. The letter defines diathermy as:

..."treatments that deliver energy to treat specific areas of the body. These treatments are typically used for the following purposes:
      • relieve pain, stiffness and muscle spasms
        reduce joint contractures
reduce swelling and pain after surgery
        promotes wound healing

I think that it's a therapy that uses heat.

I think probably a TENS unit would also fall in this category --- or perhaps any kind of pace-maker?
