I think that you should be able to request a hand-search for any reason without question.

The last time I flew though, I had a not-so-nice security woman questioning me! I told her I had a pacemaker and she said "well YOU look to young to have a pacemaker!" (I'm in my 20's). I replied...well I do.... and she copped an attitude with me and tried to tell me that I can go through the machines! I'm sorry but you are not my doctor! I really don't think it is their business to question my medical background! Just do the pat down and let me on my way!
How totally rude. I know they have important security job protecting us US citizens at airports. Who gave them a md degree= yes young people with cardiomyopathy have pacemakers= have a friend now at 37 it is saving his life
I would say same as you implant for back pain- also have a friend with one of those at early 40;s. None of their business. All reps give patients cards to carry with them whether it is pacemaker, brain implants for parkinsons, implants for seizure control etc..........so I would think produce the card hand it to them and they should clear you and let you on your way. your medtronics card is your verfication and NONE of their business what type of implant . That should be legally info your private health what medical diagnosis it is for period
do u carry your medtronic card with you and show it to them when u go through security?

ONce it sent me to my knees and I thought the employees at best buy were gonna call 911! In two days I'm flying for the first time since I've had the interstim. Anyone gone through airport security before with interstim? Do they make you go through the metal detector anyway? I won't be able to do It! I have a card, is that sufficient or should I get a note from my doctor?

          Re: interstim and airport security?

I just got the trial interstim today and I don't hAve a card. It is obvious there are wire coming out of me though.
Interesting how some of you go with the pacemaker explanation. I went to camp with a girl who was 14 and had to get one. She had, had an earring disorder. So there is no age on pacemakers, that is for sure.

If you're planning a trip before you have a card, I suggest you get something from your doctor so you won't go through the regular security. I have a card for my pain pump and my husband has one for his pacemaker, but neither of us got them until we'd had the units for several weeks.

              Re: interstim and airport security?

Thank you Donna! I won't be traveling for several months. I'll request a card when I go to the MD in 2 weeks. I think I should still get it soon because I'm busy so if I don't do it now, I could see myself procrastinating too long.

                Re: interstim and airport security?

After I got my pain pump implanted, the company sent me a card without my even asking. And my husband had a pacemaker implanted in April and his card just came in the mail recently.
