  • Interstim vs TENS

Anyone done both TENS and Interstim care to share their experience? How do they compare especially in effect?

My urologist is already talking about interstim once the Hunner's lesions are healed. I've done TENS on myself with mostly a distracting effect. I kinda of assume that Interstim won't be much different. Yet I talked with an Interstim rep and he's saying it improves everything from retention to urgency, constipation and diarrhea.

There are many posts by folks with interstims --- both positive and negative --- I suggest you review them. You'll also want to do a search for FDA interstim and look at information about approval, and also about complaints. The best advice I can think of is to be informed before you make your decision.

    Warm hugs,

It's all about the potential risks vs benefits. Interstim is a surgical form of neuromodulation that has plenty of reported adverse events and risks. It is the last form that is usually considered. In contract, Urgent PC, is non invasive and uses an acupuncture needle as a vector to the nerve combined with a TENS unit to administer gentle stimulation. It's far easier, has the same FDA approvals without the risks and costs of Interstim. TENS alone can help distract you from the pain but it's probably not going to provide a long-term effect. - Jill

So yeah, I was thinking if the Interstim is like TENS, there's no real point. Haven't heard of Urgent PC. Does it have the same efficacy as interstim? I don't like the idea of an implant, of course.
