  • Interstim Causing Sciatica Pain

I have the interstim and starting in April or May of this year starting having sciatica pain. I went to the Orthopedic dr and had 3 epidural injections in my back none which helped. Now still in pain and having pain in my right butt and pain down right leg ...I am starting to believe the interstim is the reason for all this pain. Can the Interstim irritate the sciatic nerve? I turned off my battery a few days ago and still have pain. The urologist took xrays to see if it has moved and go today to see what he says. I am to the point I just want the thing removed. I am so tired of being in pain every single day and this interstim at this point I believe is the issue because the butt muscle behind the implant hurts. Hopefully good news today at dr

Yes, it can. Having shooting pains down the leg is a documented adverse event in the FDA's MAUDE database. Also, is there any chance that you could be having some pocket pain. YOu mentioned that you had pain in the butt muscle behind the implant… and sometimes the pocket they create becomes infected. What did your doctor say today??

      Re: Interstim Causing Sciatica Pain

I am to the point I am so tired of this pain. The urologist today seems to believe the interstim is not what is causing my pain. He says the xray shows no movement in the leads and he thinks if it was the interstim then I would of had this problem along time ago since I have had it years. The pain I am feeling is in the muscle that is behind the fat in your bottom where they put the battery, and having pain down the leg. He said he would be happy to remove it but he says he is 99% positive I will still have this pain even if he removes it. He wants me to consult my pain management dr and then get back with him in a few days. Been trying to read online and to me it sounds like piriformis pain. All I know is I refuse to keep going on with this pain so one of these drs is gonna do something for me besides just try to dose me up narcotics...any advice would appreciate it

        Re: Interstim Causing Sciatica Pain

I went to er the other night in intense pain. They did xrays with contrast of my hip area and did blood work to see if I had infection. They said I didn't have infection and the site didn't look infected. They said they dont know what is causing the pain. So now I am at the point not knowing what to do. My urologist says the pain isn't from the interstim but i dont know what to do. I have hip and buttock pain that goes down my leg even with it turned off so he believes it is just normal sciatica pain not from the interstim. I am wondering if removing unit will help the pain or if I will continue having the pain so right now at a stand still trying to figure out what move to make.

It's really difficult to know if your interstim is causing problems. I do know that I have read about several people who have had problems. I have read that the interstim helps with frequency, but not with pain; I have also read that some people do have pain relief.

If you're not feeing comfortable with what you are hearing, my best suggestion is to seek another opinion. You shouldn't even have to repeat tests.

            Re: Interstim Causing Sciatica Pain

JenSue, I have the Interstim but have never had such pain. Has the Interstim helped with your frequency issues since you have had it for years? If the thinking is that it's sciatica, maybe you should consult an orthopedic doctor. It seems to me if you have had the Stim for years and are just now having sciatica pain then maybe it's not the Stim but a new development. Although it could be the Stim. Either way, seek treatment for the pain with an ortho and if he helps then you'll know it's not the Interstim. If you remove an effective Interstim and still have sciatica, you'll end up with a double wammy of frequency and sciatica. Sending hugs your way.
