    TENS machine at CVS-decent price and does help

    Hello,

    I had heard of TENS therapy and thought of trying it. The day before my PT appt, I saw one at CVS (which I thought was odd), and since it was only 50 dollars I bought it. I did not try it until my PT appt. My physical therapist was very impressed with it, especially for the price. It is made for the back, but can be moved to the stomach/pelvis (where I have most pain). I had some severe pain that day (she just palpated some areas and I cried and screamed). We decided to test it out, and after 20 minutes on P8, I felt much better. I have been using it once a day, especially with bad breakthrough pain. It helps with my kidney pain (which is a result of terrible bladder spasms-my kidney has been checked out). I just wanted to let people know that you can find a decent TENS machine for a decent price at your nearby drugstore. But they are going quickly, I bought the last one at my CVS, and my mom is having issues finding one for her back pain.

    Medications:
    Elavil 25mg (helped with nighttime urination-used to be 7 or more times a night, now just once)
    Cymbalta 60mg
    Gabapentin (Neurontin) (3200mg/day)
    Zyrtec 10mg
    Xanax 0.5mg up to 3 times a day(spasms, anxiety)
    Uribel
    Macrobid 100mg (only on days when doing an instill)
    Albuterol
    Yaz Birth Control (3 months on birth control, then period)
    Pelvic floor therapy
    Valium 5 mg (inserted vaginally)
    MScontin 30 mg (3 times a day)
    Percocet 10/325mg (every 6 hours)
    TENS Therapy, CVS machine, 30 minutes once or twice a day
    Sanctura XR 60 mg (to help control severe bladder spasms that are causing urinary retention episodes and enable normal bladder sensations)

    *** 1/4 of a teaspoon of baking soda in an 8 ounce glass of water up to 4 times a day*****

    Instill:

    Currently doing hyaluronic acid instillations (cystistat-6 instillations, once a week, already had 4...not sure if helping)

    Used to do these:

    Solu-Cortef (act-o-vial) 100 mg: 2 mL
    Marcaine (bupivicaine) 0.5 % 25 mL
    20,000 units Heparin
    3 mL sodium bicarbonate

    Diagnoses: Moderate IC, scoliosis, asthma, ovarian cysts, PFD, IBS, Fibromyalgia, vulvodynia, Fowler's syndrome (mild) 'Central Sensitivity Syndrome.'

    My neurologist just wrote a prescription for a TENS machine, thinking I could use it on my migraines. But if you can get them without a prescription that's awesome! I'll check CVS's website!
    Exposure to an unclean hot tub 2-17-07 FIRST UTI
    (Got ringworm-like sores from it before)
    (Someone else got what looked like 'eye herpes')
    (My husband got an ear infection. We were all just sitting there!)
    SYMPTOMS: Severe Urgency/Frequency for 18 months, food sensitivity, widespread nerve pains (random and everywhere), deep bladder pain that developed into flares at 4 months. Completely unreasonable diet sensitivity.
    TESTS: Nothing showed in urine cultures, CT scan, Cystoscopy, Lumbar puncture, back and brain MRIs, EMG tests.
    Hydrodistension Surgery/Biopsy showed minor glomerulations, inflammatory and mast cells, and a rare eosinophil. Blood tests show elevated ANA.
    CONFUSED: My hands and feet started falling asleep. I got twitching nerves or muscles everywhere. I started having concentration and memory problems, vision problems, then fatigue and chronic migraines. Fibromyalgia diagnosed, SSDI disability awarded at 4 years, then gone at 7 years. Won the appeal. IBS and esophagus spasms at 6 years.
    MEDICATIONS: Marcaine/Heparin/Sodium Bicarb instills, Lyrica, Nortriptyline, Uribel. Paxil and Trazadone from before. Painkillers as needed. Supplements include CystoProtek, DH Aloe, Colostrum.
    PREVIOUS CONDITIONS: Sudden onset of double vision, Paxil Discontinuation Syndrome, PTSD

      The one that I have is made for lower back, and has the electrodes built right into it. I am not sure how that would work. You can buy it, and always talk with your doctor and then return it. That is what I did, discussed with my PT and we tried it.

      You may need a TENS unit with electrodes that you can actually place on your head. Mine is for the back, and also abdomen.

        Erin, thanks for the info! I used to use a Tens when I was getting pft but haven't in a while. I got lots of relief from it when I used it. I can't wait to purchase one from CVS!

          No problem Aleet7. I was pretty excited about finding one, and it really hurts. If you get it (can be hard to find-it is located near the ice packs), and sometimes they are not always in stock.

          This unit has really helped me out, and my PT recommends to use it on the setting P3 or P8. I always use p8 (it recycles through the all of the other treatments so your body does not get used to the pain treatments). It is portable and easy to bring around. It really has helped me at times, when I feel like I am having bad spasms. I usually do it once a day for 30 minutes (sometimes longer depending on the pain).             It's very important to discuss use of the TENS unit with your doctor. There are reasons a physician's order is required to purchase a unit.

              Thanks for the response Donna, that is very important. I was just interested, but did not use it until I met with my PT. It was mentioned that we may pursue this type of therapy, but not a definite thing. I just decided to go for it, but as I said before, I did not use it until I was with my PT and she could further instruct me on how to use it and take care of it.
