  • can't tolerate tricyclics

Anyone else out there have problems taking tricyclics due to side effects? I have tried imipramine 10 mg and found I stayed awake, felt lousy, felt shaky and nervous the next day, and it took till 2 p.m. for it to wear off. Many years ago I tried nortriptyline 5 mg. for headaches and lasted on it for 1 month. It made me very irritable and crabby and I stopped taking it. I know these are a good class of drugs for bladder and nerve pain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Diana.

Hey, Diana, sorry to hear that you are having problems with the tricyclics. I had a problem tolerating them, too. I tried Elavil, and at first thought it was the best stuff on earth, but soon developed what I think might be an allergy (although my doc says that is impossible) which caused me increasing, horrible bladder pain/irritation every time I took it.

I tried again recently, now that Elmiron has been coating my bladder, hoping I could tolerate it (because it works great on my fibro/arthritis pain) and it set my bladder off again. So, as much as I wish I could take the stuff, it's clear I just can't.

    Love, ICY

Hi, Sandra, do you take the oxazepam in addition to a tricyclic, or alone? Just curious. Thanks, Diana.

          Hi Diana,

Yes I can certainly can understand your situation. I have Fibromyalgia but because I'm either only able to tolerate a few TCA's at a small dosage or not at all my main source of pain relief comes from an opiate called Oxycontin. The problem I experience with this situation is that because certain TCA's are supposed to be quite helpful in curbing Fibromyalgia pain because I cannot really take them I am stuck on a medication that has a bad reputation as it's an abused street drug and therefore get treated fairly poorly from a lot of different medical professionals. Far out I don't even smoke or drink and certainly don't take any type of street drugs. But that's a different situation altogether..........but yes I also have many issues with TCA's (Tricyclics)

Oh Yea I feel for you all. When I tell my doctor that I cannot take them due to numerous side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, vision disturbances and others they think I am being a hypochondriac or something.

With regards to (Davey123) situation I have had exactly the same problem although I don't suffer from Fibromyalgia and was treated mainly with MS Contin. I would get treated like crap as soon as people realised that I was taking it to help with my pain never mind it was due my to inability to handle the adverse side effects from tricyclics. Actually from a lot of different mediation's not only them. People can be so judgemental and nasty.

            Good luck all.
