  • Elavil is doing the trick!

I started Elavil one week ago and am shocked at the results! I have mild IC, with minimal pain....mostly frequency and urgency. The Elavil has knocked out all of my pain, frequency and urgency. In fact, (knock on wood) I feel pretty close to normal again. In addition to the Elavil, I am on Elmiron, Atarax, Premarin (Hysterectomy in 97) and a blood pressure med.

There is a downside...I am in a light fog and am hoping that side effect goes away soon. It is hard to work when it takes every effort you have to form a coherent sentence.

I took 25mg for the first few days before I went to bed. and slept like a baby. I am now taking 50mg, with one pill in the morning and one at ngiht. If I dont split the dose, I found it wore off by 4:00 PM and I was feeling the urge and discomfort again.

This is the first time in 4+ months I have felt some hope! I am so excited and wanted to share my excitement with others!

I"m so happy for you! I am taking it too, it's helped me be able to sleep through the night and probably helped with my pain, but I know what you mean about the side-effects!! I have been afraid to up my dose to the 50mg reccomended by my doctor because I feel like I've finally adjusted to the 25mg. That said, I think time helps "clear the fog" and give you some energy back.
IC symptoms since Dec. 12 2010 after confirmed bladder infection "never went away." Recently also diagnosed with PCOS, piriformis syndrome, and pelvic floor dysfunction, sinus issues. I was in great health before fall 2010.
Current medications: citalopram 40 mg, valium 2.5 mgs a night, lidocaine patch (for back pain), Prelief
Therapies tried or continuing: stretches, walks, baths, internal massage, physical therapy, IC diet, IF unit, heating pad, mindfulness based stress reduction classes, cognitive therapy, books on IC and pelvic pain...

Drugs Tried: the urinary analgesics, 4 kinds of muscle relaxants (including in suppository form), hydroxyzine, 3 kinds of TCA's, lyrica, cymbalta, 6 months elmiron, vesicare, antibiotics, prednisone (after sinus surgery), NSAIDS...
Supplements: over 20 herbs and supplements, including regimens from TCM practitioner and a naturopathic MD
Intravesical/Surgical: 3 instills of Uracyst, 2 “rescue instills” lidocaine, bicarb, elmiron; 1 self-instill of marcaine, a steroid, bicarb and heparin; 1 hydrodistention and capsaicin instill (made me worse, still recovering two months later...)
Other: Acupuncture treatments, magnets (LOL), Anti-Candida Diet (2 months), Wheat free diet, water pH

            Elavil

What is a good dosage to start elavil at? I was given this at the very beginning when it was really bad and had retention. Im not sure even what the dose was at that time, and i was pretty well delusional.Id like to start at a low dose. so maby 10 mg? Does 5 mg work for anyone?

            What does elavil do exactly?
            28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

I started at 10mg per night & it reduced my frequency from 60x a day down to 20x within a week or two. I was only able to sleep 20 minutes without waking up needing to void, but the first night I took the 10mg of Elavil, I slept 4 hours straight - I was so grateful I cried. Eventually I increased it to 20 mg per night and that helped even more.

I am thinking it will help me too? Has anyone tried Lyrica and had the same results? Or is there another anti depresent that will not make me retain urine? Would 5 mg of elavil make me retain if it is such a low dose?

I have tried both lyrica and elavil. Lyrica made me feel totally doped up and weird though it did help the symptoms. I am on 25 mg at night of elavil but it isn't quite doing the trick so trying 50 mg tonight. I don't think 5 mg of elavil should make you retain. The only one that really did that to me was vesicare or enablex ( anti spasmadics).
                  My story:
31 year old teacher from Canada
I have had ic for 8 years
                  I currently take:
                  Elmiron 2 twice a day
                  Atarax 25mg a day
Elavil 25 mg once at night
Rescue instillations: First 9 over 3 weeks then starting a maintenance at once a week

                  Glucosamine
                  Aloe Vera capsules
                  naturopathic medicines
                  trying lyrica at 300mg 3x a day
                  Trying Uracyst instills
                  acupuncture

                  :woohoo:
Based on Dr's findings during bladder distension was diagnosed with "severe" ic in Winter of 2006.
                  Tried and failed:
Ditropan xl ( Made me feel much worse)
