  • Low dose Elavil?

Hey! I wa wondering of anyone of on a very small doese of elavil? I want to try it but earlier on the Dr gave me a high dose (when I was flaring BAD) and it made it worse with retention... Not sure what the dose was I was out of it lol. I think it must have been at least 20 mg. Anyway, I wanted to take like 5mg and then work up maby to 10? is this possible to get 10 mg and just cut them in half? Im gonna malke an appt with my dr pretty quick

    Thanks!

    28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

I believe it comes in a 5 mg dose. My husband takes 10 mg nightly for arthritis pain and it does help him.

I started out with 10mg. In the beginning, if I took it by 7:30 at night, I was ok to wake up & drive at 6:30am. Over time, the drowsiness at night & early morning went away and now I don't have any problematic side effects from it.

My doctor started me on 10mg at night and then bumped it up to 20mg after a week. I've noticed a big improvement. I was under the impression that 20mg was a low dose.

Hey thanks for the replys . I will ask my dr about giving me 10 mg and cutting it in half... I heard it can make you really tired but that it wears off. I already have enough trouble getting up in the am if I take hydroxizine at night! lol But that its seeming to get better now. Im hoping that the elavil will help a little with frequency... did anyone find it helped with lessening the trips to the toilet!!!??? haha

Yes, very much so. When I first got IC, I was voiding 60x a day, completely unable to sleep more than 20 minutes at a time. After two months of this, I was desperate.

The very first night I took Elavil, I slept for four hours straight and I was so grateful I cried. After 3 weeks, I was sleeping through the night, only having to get up once or twice. And my overall voiding dropped from 60x a day down to a manageable 15-20x.

When I went up to 20 mg, I had even more improvement.

From what I've heard from my doctors and read, 10mg is generally the starting dose. Many patients use 20-25mg. Patients with severe IC can be prescribed 50mg, but there are more side effects at that dosage. And of course, only take the amount the doctor prescribes for you.

My 10mg pills are tiny (I take 2 of them because the 20 or 25mg tablets have dyes that bother my IC). I think if I tried to split them, they'd just break unevenly.

              Wishing you relief soon,
              Kadi

I got retention from it at 5 mg's, but i am prone to retention, the higher dose didn't make the retention worse, it also did not make me sleepy.

Everyone is different and therefore get different reactions, alls you can do it talk to your Dr. and try it and see what happens.

                  Good luck MG

I use 25 mg of Elivil. Lately, I have been waking up with the sweats and a metalic taste in my mouth. Does anyone else have this?

I have never experienced those symptoms. It sounds very odd. Did you get a new prescription filled recently? Have you checked the pills to be sure they did not give you something else by mistake?

I just started taking this 2 weeks ago. I take 10mg 2 hours before bed. I have a really hard time feeling 'sleepy' so I have not noticed that they make me tired. I don't have any side effects like retention etc. I think it would be easy to split them and take only half.

I was started on 25mg at night and I too slept through the night and nearly cried from relief. However, I noticed drowsiness and tingling/numbing in my arms and legs so they suggested half the dose (so 12.5 mg). Im only 120 pounds so maybe that was too much for me.
Anyway, I am doing well with the lower dose. Dry mouth but WELL worth the relief it brings.

                              Elavil Dosage

I take 25 mg and Uro would like me increase it to 50 mg.
He thinks I will get more benefit from the higher dose. I tried it and didn't feel very well. It was helping me sleep, but the last two nights have not gone well. I was told that Elavil helps with the pain, so I will stay on 25 mg. My bladder seems to be better. As of now I am getting Elmiron instills at the docs. This is my 8th. I tried the pills but they made me feel worse.
