  • Woo-hoo! 1st night with Elavil

After a disappointing first consultation with a urologist who only wants to treat IC with a hydro, I did manage to convince him to give me a prescription for Elavil.

He gave me 25 mgs (I only wanted 10). I slept for seven straight hours last night--first time in six months. Wow!

I took it at 7:00 pm and was out like a light at 9 pm. However, I got up at 6 am with minimal grogginess.

I have an appointment with another urologist in early November, and will have just enough Elavil to last until then. I'm crossing fingers and toes that it will help with daytime frequency too.

Yay! I'm so happy to hear that. The first night I took Elavil, I slept like a baby, and it helped IMMENSELY for daytime problems as well. It was a life saver for me. I hope it works that well for you too! Hang in there.

        Thanks, Rubes.

I got up once last night, but that definitely doable.

May I ask how long it took for you to see benefits with daytime frequency?

I'm starting Elavil tonight, too. I haven't slept through the night in 5 months and I am really hoping this helps! I've seen 2 Uro's so far, and neither wanted to do more than Vesicare (didn't work at all) or Cystex, which I decided not to take because I don't want to be on any more antibacterial/biotic stuff.
          Wish me luck tonight!

            Hi there,

Elavil has definitely helped me sleep better. I'm on day 8, and have been sleeping really well. I still get up twice a night, but I fall right back to sleep.

I am starting to experience some side effects and I have not seen a decrease in my frequency (my primary symptom) yet, but I'm going to hang in there for a month and see how it goes.

            Pleasant dreams!

Thanks, I slept well last night. I only got up once, but frequency hasn't been my issue, it's been pain. I've been a bit groggy today, but I'm not sure if it's the Elavil or the fact that the night before last, I didn't get even an hour of sleep.

What type of side effects are you having? I know everyone will have different reactions, but I hope it continues working for you and your side effects lessen.

From what I've gathered from the board discussions, I think pain is the often first symptom that one gets noticeable relief from with Elavil.

My side effects have primarily been forgetfulness. (This morning I forgot to shampoo my hair in the shower..) Also, Monday night I woke up with what felt like a golf ball lodged at the base of my throat--very strange feeling. It stayed with me all day, but the sensation is gone now.

And, I've not been very hungry--but that's one side effect I won't complain about.

I forgot to mention the most noticeable side effect (see what I mean about forgetfulness! ) ---constipation. So, you may want to have something on hand to deal with that unfortunate possibility.

Sorry! I just saw this again... I noticed relief during the daytime pretty quickly. My worst symptoms were a burning feeling in my bladder, and the pressure, like my bladder was really full when it wasn't. I felt like a new woman immediately - like the first night, and during the daytime as well the first time I was on elavil. That was 2 years ago. I just recently restarted it and it took a few days to feel better - but I also started with a lower dose, and eventually just gave in and went back to 25 mg. I will say, this time, it didn't get rid of the burning feeling all the way, but prosed ds helped with that. Only problem with that for me is that it takes a full day of taking it regularly (every 6 hrs) to notice it working.

Just wanted to give an update on my 1st week with Elavil. I've been sleeping much better, I actually slept through the night for the past 2 nights! So amazing! The first night, I started to have pain, like my bladder was full and I thought in my head "ugh! It must be only 2am or so." It was actually 5:30, I was psyched. I made it to 5am this morning.
I'm still have dry mouth and get dizzy sometimes, but not too bad.
I've been sticking REALLY close to the diet and am hoping this good feeling lasts!
