    25mg

Hi I asked my Dr if I could try Atarax because I'd seen it recommended here on the ICN. She'd never heard of it, so looked it up and read that 25mg is the recommended dose. This was not specifically for ic tho- just in general. Ive been taking it for just over a week now.

Thanks so much. My doctor has me on 10mg, I just don't see how that is going to help much.

Dosages can vary, some are on 10mg some may be on 100mg, if you feel you need a higher dose talk to your Dr. I hope it helps you.

I take 10 mg, and it works for me. I'm sensitive to meds though, so you may need a higher dose. If you don't see an improvement in your symptoms, talk to your doctor.

I take 50mg at night and can take the 50mg up to 3 times per day, as needed. I take extra during the day if I'm in a very bad flare. It is fine at night, makes me tired if I take it during the day!
Please consider food allergy testing. My regular doc thought the idea was pointless. My IC doc referred me to allergist and I found I have severe multiple food allergies that seem to be causing the bulk of my bad IC symptoms.

Severe IC w/Hunners Ulcers, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Myofascial Pain, Severe Multiple Food Allergies(corn, milk, egg, beef, tomato, string bean, peas, sulfites) w/severe enviro allergies to go along.

            Current Meds:

            Amitriptyline 10mg @ bedtime
            Atarax - 50 mg @ bedtime
            Loratadine - 10mg in morning
Pepcid - 20 mg in morning
            Klonopin - .5 as needed & @ bedtime
            Endocet 10/325 - as needed
            Flexeril - as needed
            Prelief as needed

On harsh diet. Low-acid IC diet with 100% avoidance of egg, corn, milk, and sulfites. Not fun at all...

            Didn't Help:
            Pyridium as needed
            Elmiron instills 2x/week

Stopped due to loss of medical coverage:
            Lyrica - 150mg 2x day
            Savella - 50mg 2x day
            Elmiron - 100mg 3x day

            Procedures:

7-8-09 Laparoscopy, hysterscopy, D&C, endometrial ablasion, bladder hydrodistention and cystoscopy. Found large fibroid on outside of uterus and removed it and they found large Hunners Ulcurs on my bladder indicating moderate to severe IC.

I take 25 mg at night and I don't notice a difference at all.. I don't think it is helping me at all. It just helps me sleep. It does not heklp with the IC symptoms. Is it supposed to lower the freqency?

From what my docs have told me, Atarax is a heavier antihistamine(like benadryl). It is believed that in some IC cases, mast cells attack and eat away at the lining of the bladder as part of a histamine(allergic) reaction. The Atarax helps if your IC has a mast cell/histamine/allergic component. I take that, along with 20mg of zyrtec and 20mg pepcid in the morn. The pepcid actually enhances the action of the antihistamine, making it a super anti-allergy combo.

                  Hope that helps!

                    atarax and urge

I have continued taking the 25mg at night for the last 10 days. Does anybody find that it has increased their urge to pee? Maybe it is just a coincidence but the past couple of days I still feel the urge after I have just been. I thought if it was retention then only a tiny bit of urine would come out the second time I went but I almost always pee a decent amount! The urge feeling is just there more than usual. I might stop taking it for a few days and see if it is the Atatrax or just a coincidence. Has this been a problem for anybody else?

                    Thanks

Thanks for the many responses. I think I do have allergies, so I might see an allergist ( my mom works for one and has begged me for years to get tested). Does anyone try Benadryl? Does it help?

I have been on 10 mg at night. Between that, my overactive bladder med, and my cpap machine (for sleep apnea), my mouth is so dry it's almost unbearable some days so I haven't ask for more yet.

Bruegelfan, I have been contemplating taking the generic 24-hour Zyrtec my PCP recommended and my hydroxyzine but didn't know if you could two antihistamines at the same time. (Duh, didn't think to ask the PCP when I was there.) I actually stopped the hydroxyzine to go on the Zyrtec to see if I could get any relief from my constant coughing and now after a week or two my frequency is back. Not as bad as before, but still definitely there. I sent a PM through my urologist's website portal asking about this but haven't heard back yet. But I see you're doing it so here I go!

I had been in a remission for about three months until this frequency started again.
