bob tried every one out there and suffered retention, along with other problems, and Vesicare was one. You may not have this problem, it is worth a try, you will know fairly quickly. Talk with your doc right away if you have any problem, and read the circular or look it up on line for side effects. Good luck, hope it works for you. Jill, wife of Bob -
Hi,
I have taken oxybutynin xl 5mg in the past, vesicare 5mg this year and the oxytrol patch (which is oxybutynin transdermally). In comparison between the first two I definitely liked the vesicare better. Sometimes I used to feel like oxybutynin would make it harder to go and would "hurt" a little. I didn't have those symptoms with vesicare and I liked it other then the awful drying side effects. Those are supposed to be better in vesicare too though I thought they were comparable for both. One of the keys with these type meds is don't go to the bathroom unless you really have to go. I found if I waited to go until I really had to go then there were no issues but if I tried to go because I was leaving the house for example it does make it harder because your bladder is relaxed by the medicine and if its not full, its harder to get it out. Hope that makes sense!
I switched to oxytrol which is probably my favorite out of the 3 because it has virtually no side effects though its a little less effective and I had zero retention with that. At the moment I am off of it because I have a rash that I think was caused by new pj bottoms but didn't put a new patch on just in case. Will try it again once the rash is gone.
Each person is different, and its definitely worth a try to ease your frequency. I find them very helpful and I hope you don't retain from it. The 5mg is the lowest dose, so thats good. Since starting the nortriptyline my spasms have not come back so maybe in the future I won't need it.Cindi

P.S. Besides cutting down on frequency I find vesicare stops the urge feeling. Sometimes I feel like I have to go 15 minutes after I last went but I just don't go for a couple hours knowing I really don't have to go. This at least for me, greatly cuts down on that feeling.Cindi

i've been taking 4mg of detrol la for about a year. it hasn't stopped working completely, but it's not helping my bladder spasms anymore.
today my uro said to stop the detrol la and prescribed me 10mg of vesicare. i'm worried because i see that dosage caused retention for some people, but i figure i'll give it a shot.
for those of you that it caused retention - after how long did you notice this? immediately taking it the first time? after a few weeks?lucky to live in hawaii but having a hard time and have a lot of questions.
vesicare
detrol la
pyridium
ditropan
buspirone

I was on detrol and saw little from it. My uro put me on 5mg of Vesicare for two weeks then went up to 10mg. I was on it with some noticeable improvement till about 9 months ago when my frequency went through the roof particularly at night. i was changed to Tovias and in 4 days I was back in the uro's office being taught how to self cath. Well long story short, this was the turning point that got me told IC was my problem.Comment
